Ypsilanti Community Utilities Authority tests Paint Creek after sewage overflow
Crews with the Ypsilanti Community Utilities Authority were testing the E. coli levels in the Paint Creek in Ypsilanti Township today after a sanitary sewer overflow yesterday.
Perry Thomas of YUCA said the utilities department was alerted that a small stream of sewage was running from a manhole in the 2100 block of Whittaker Road. The sewage was flowing into a stormwater catch basin, he said.
Thomas said a truck was deployed to unclog the wastewater main and corrected the problem in about 90 minutes.
Thomas said YCUA doesn't know exactly when the problem started, but officials suspect less than 100 gallons of sewage were released.
YCUA expects to know within 24 hours whether the E. coli levels in Paint Creek are higher than normal.
