It's no secret that kids like fire engines, and Saturday's Ypsilanti Fire Truck Muster certainly pleased the young set, but it was just as much fun for those who got to show off their prized possessions.

“I like bringing the truck to show and talking to people…You get little stories about the trucks. It’s really fun to collect their stories,” said Marcia McCrary, who was at the event with her husband, Bob.

Twin brothers Dan and Dave Egeler brought four trucks between them to the show. One of the trucks, a 1947 REO, was the truck their father drove as a volunteer fireman in Leland, Michigan.

“They started collecting the Leland trucks, then they branched out to other trucks. Now they have six between them, six or seven,” said Nicole Egeler, Dave Egeler’s wife. She said her husband enjoys showing the trucks to children.

At Saturday's muster in Riverside Park, children were able to ring fire truck bells and play with the sirens. They received free hats and could ride in miniature fire trucks. But the event wasn’t just about showing off fire trucks.

The muster, sponsored by the Michigan Firehouse Museum in Ypsilanti, showcased many trucks from the 1920s to the 1990s, and brought in owners from across the country. “We have a gentleman here who’s from California. His fire trucks are kept here in Michigan,” said Mary Koehler, representing the museum, where many of the trucks are housed and displayed at the museum.

“It’s a fun gathering. It’s a fun time for the fire truck owners,” said Koehler.
