Ypsilanti High School Top Scholars

Ypsilanti High School will hold its 2013 graduation ceremonies Tuesday, June 4, 7 p.m. at the EMU Convocation Center. The class includes approximately 158 graduates.

Nick Carey
Parents: Melanie and Jon Carey
Activities and Awards: During his High School career Nick was the Senior Class Vice President, and an active key club and National Honor Society member. During his senior year, Nick was elected as the Ypsilanti High School homecoming king. Nick was a member of the Jazz Band, Marching band, and Wind Symphony at the High School for 4 years. Nick was a 4-year soccer player and a 3 year lacrosse Player for Ypsilanti, being elected captain in both of these sports during his senior season. In addition to being on the soccer and lacrosse teams Nick was a member of the swim and dive team in his sophomore year. Nick was also selected to the All-SEC Lacrosse teams in both 2011 and 2012 seasons. Outside of school Nick is an active member of his churches youth group, which focuses on volunteer work within its community, especially with the elderly and homeless families. Nick has been awarded the "Comcast Leaders and Achievers" scholarship.
Plans After Graduation: Nick was selected as a preferred admit to the Stephen M. Ross School of business at the University of Michigan in the fall.

John W. Davis
Parents: John and Mary Davis
Activities and Awards: John is Captain of the Varsity Tennis team and the Varsity Swim and Dive team. He has also helped the Ypsilanti High School to four consecutive state competitions in Mock Trial. He plays lacrosse, is a member of the National Honor Society, is the Vice President of the Ypsilanti High School Key Club, and is a Senior Cabinet member. He plays trumpet and french horn, and participates in marching band, wind symphony, and jazz band. He has a 4.129 GPA.
Plans After Graduation: John will attend the University of Wisconsin next fall to study Pre-Medicine. He wanted to thank his parents for their continued support of his activities and academics.

Chloe Gasiciel
Parents: Ed and Teresa Gasiciel
Activities and Awards: Chloe is a member of the National Honor Society, and was a recent Presidential Scholarship Finalist at Eastern Michigan University. Chloe plays the flute and piccolo and has been a four-year member of the marching band, and a three-year member of the wind symphony - where she has been a section leader in both her junior and senior years. She has received the Band MVP Award, and the Marching Band Outstanding Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior Awards. Chloe has participated for six-years in the Regional Solo & Ensemble Competitions, where she has received a top score each year. She also received a superior rating at the State Solo & Ensemble Competition during her junior year. Other activities include playing the bass drum for the Winter Drum Line during her sophomore year, and being a member of the Pit Orchestra for the school musical during her junior and senior years. Chloe is a recipient of the Y-Award for Academics (Principal’s List, 4.0.), and has also spent time during high school as a volunteer at the Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary and the Ypsilanti District Library.
Plans After Graduation: Chloe will be attending the Honors College at Eastern Michigan University, majoring in Spanish.

Jasmine N. Jones
Parents: Mark Jones and Carla Wiley-Jones
Activities and Awards: Jasmine has been on student council for four years, serving as vice president her junior year. She is the senior cabinet president. Jasmine was a member of the Key Club during her junior year. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and Upward Bound. She has participated in basketball for 4 years, playing varsity for 3. She has been varsity captain for two years. Jasmine has received the All-SEC Academic Team award this year. She has received All-Conference the past two years for basketball. Jasmine was also the Daughter's of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award recipient from Ypsilanti High School. She has done various volunteer services such as tutoring 2nd graders at Estabrook Elementary School and serving Thanksgiving meals at the Salvation army.
Plans After Graduation: Jasmine will be attending the University of Michigan in the fall. She is majoring in Brain, Behavior, and Cognitive Science.

Destiny Mack
Parents: Aunt- Sandra Glenn, Uncle- Stephen Glenn, Grandfather- Leon Mack
Activities and Awards: Destiny was a member of the National Honor Society. Striving towards her academics, she was placed in AP and honors classes. She also was a four-year member of the YHS cheerleading team. Out of those four years she was chosen as captain for two years, even though the team encouraged rotating leadership. Outside of school she is a part of the YWMWCB (Young Women Making Washtenaw County Better) group. This group comes from the Washtenaw County Police Department and involves community service, various projects, leadership skills, and etc. Destiny does not stop there with her volunteer work, she also volunteers at soup kitchens and senior citizens homes through programs at her church.
Plans After Graduation: Destiny will be attending the University of Michigan, majoring in biology to ultimately go into medical school.

Cesia Martinez-Chavarria
Parents: Jose Alberto Martinez Ruiz and Mercedes De Martinez
Activities and Awards: Cesia has participated in many extra curricular activities that include being a member of Ypsilanti High School's National Honor Society, Senior Cabinet, Chamber Singers and a member of Varsity Sports. She was a three year runner for the Track and Field team in which during her sophomore year, she got voted captain of the Distance Squad. Now she is a first year soccer player for the Varsity Women Soccer team. Cesia likes to be involved in her community, she was the director of an after school club Future Entrepreneurs Club and she was selected to be an advisor for the YHS Career Day in 2012. Cesia not only continues to maintains her scholarly habits but at the same time make her appearances on stage. She has taken roles in the Ypsilanti High School's production of The Music Man and The Drowsy Chaperone.
Plans After Graduation: Cesia plans to attend Columbia College Chicago after graduating to pursue a major in the world of Fashion Business.

Jose Martinez-Chavarria
Parents: Jose Alberto Martinez-Ruiz and Mercedes De Martinez
Activities and Awards: Jose is an active member of the arts community at Ypsilanti High School. He always participates in the school's musical, most recently The Drowsy Chaperone. Jose was the director of a middle school drama club named Young Actors On The Rise. Besides acting, Jose is a singer in Ypsilanti High School's top choirs, Concert Choir and Chamber Singers. He was also a member of National Honor Society, Senior Cabinet, and participated in Varsity Soccer, Track and Field, and Cross Country. Although Jose loves the arts, he is able to balance and maintain excellent scholarly habits. He is enrolled in three Advanced Placement classes and received an Outstanding Academic Achievement Award at Michigan's 2013 Southeastern Conference.
Plans After Graduation: Jose plans to pursue a major in Musical Theatre. He plans on attending Columbia College Chicago but is auditioning in New York City for the American Musical and Dramatic Academy.

Meagan Winkelseth
Parents: John and Kerry Winkelseth
Activities and Awards: Meagan was a member of the National Honor Society. She received a "1" at Solo and ensemble. Meagan was a four year member of both varsity volleyball and softball. Meagan has received All-Conference honors in volleyball and softball. She has received the Sportsmanship award in volleyball and softball.
Plans After Graduation: Meagan will be attending Eastern Michigan University on an athletic scholarship.
