Ypsilanti man robbed of his cell phone after donating blood

By Amalie Nash

A man who had just given blood at a plasma center in Ypsilanti Saturday evening was robbed as he attempted to cash the service check minutes later, Ypsilanti police said.

The 24-year-old victim told police he walked across the street in the 900 block of West Michigan Avenue at about 6:45 p.m. to cash the check for donating blood.

Two men came up and attempted to make conversation with the victim, then one of the men walked away, came back and punched him in the face, reports said. The victim fell to the ground, and they stole his cell phone and got into a black car and drove away, reports said.

The victim went to a local party store to cash his check, then walked to the police station to report the incident, reports said. His finger was injured, but he did not require medical treatment, reports said.

Police have not identified any suspects. The victim described the men as black and in their mid-20s. One was 6 feet tall, 150-170 pounds and was wearing a black sweater and dark jeans. The other was 5 feet 9 inches tall, 140-160 pounds and was wearing a red sweater and dark jeans.

Anyone with information is asked to call Ypsilanti police at 734-483-9510.

I guess no good deed goes unpunished. Those are some pretty brazen thugs to woop on a guy just walking distance from the police station. Why is it that with so many people walking around with concealed weapons permits, none of the people "mugged" on the streets ever has a weapon on them. I think what we have is an ironic twist of logic in that the people who can and will carry a weapon legally also have the good sense to rarely put themselves in the position to really need it.
