Ypsilanti man struck and killed by vehicle in Jackson County after running out of gas

By AnnArbor.com Staff

A 73-year-old Ypsilanti man was killed in a crash Monday night on M-99 near Kimler Road in Springport Township, according to the Jackson Citizen-Patriot.

Arnold Thames Webster ran out of gas and stood outside his pickup truck on M-99 when a 26-year-old Springport Township woman's vehicle struck him, his truck and the truck of a man who stopped to help, Jackson County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Breining told the Citizen-Patriot.

Webster was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife and child were inside the truck and were taken to Eaton Rapids Medical Center in Eaton Rapids, Breining told the Citizen-Patriot. The driver of the car was also taken to the Eaton Rapids hospital. All had non life-threatening injuries, Breining said.

The crash occurred at about 6:20 p.m. The two trucks were on the west side of M-99, Breining said. The car was south on M-99.

The crash is still under investigation by the sheriff’s accident investigation team. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor, Breining said.

M-55 runs east to west, from Tawas to Manistee, respectively. M-18 runs north to south from Roscomoon to Gladwin...The picture makes it look like this was at an intersection since there is a stop sign in it. I wonder if that had any factor in the driver of the car was south.

We knew Arnold and helped him relocate from Ypsilanti to Springport, and our hearts go out to his family. He was a model citizen, always wanting to help others, and in general a very grateful person.

2nd person out of gas walking and killed in 2 days in SE Michigan. Very sad, but hopefully anyone reading will take note of their fuel gauge so there is not a third.

treetown, it is obvious. If the vehicles were on the west side of the road, they were obviously next to the lane headed south. And it then becomes apparent that the woman's vehicle was traveling south. Reinforced by the fact that state roads in MI that run generally north & south have odd numbers, while state roads generally running east & west have even numbers. At least that is the information contained in the list of Michigan County Designated Highways website. I used it to double check my facts instead of relying on a blog to spoon feed me my info. There is almost always adequate shoulder to pull over on state roads.

Terrible for an accident like this to happen at any time, especially around the holidays. My sincere condolences to the family of all involved. @ Tree, the use of South and West make perfect sense. Presumably, the trucks were on the West side of Southbound M-99 and the driver that hit them was traveling South. Makes sense to me

Wow, what a terrible thing. My condolences go out to the family of Mr. Webster. Also, I think the article is very confusing at the end. Road lanes typically run parallel to one another, the use of west and south here doesn't really make sense. Perhaps, the two vehicles were stopped on the western most portion of the roadway, or the shoulder on the west side of the road, and the 26 year old woman was travelling south.
