Ypsilanti Memorial Day Parade 2013

By Daniel Brenner

Monday morning started with the loud sound of marching bands and plenty of flag waving for the Ypsilanti Memorial Day Parade. A large crowd watched as a number of local veteran organizations, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts troops, government officials and others marched through the center of Ypsilanti. Two ceremonies took place; one on the Cross Street bridge, and another in the Highland Cemetery.

The route started on Huron street near Catherine and continued north until it turned on to Cross. After the first flag presentation, speeches and gun salute, the parade resumed on North River Street where the second ceremony began in the cemetery.

Memorial Day Parade actually starts at Michigan Ave & Huron. Staging area is the lot behind Puffer Red's. Since A2.com does not always get it right. The info for the 4th of July parade is that it starts on W. Cross and Oakwood and runs EAST down Cross St. To Rice in Depot town. (Just past the bridge)

Thanks for the caption correction. It has been altered. Hope you had a good weekend

Justice4All You are correct. There is no such thing as an "Ypsilanti Sheriff Deputy". The caption actually read "Ypsilanti Sheriff Officer" and that is still incorrect. It should be "Washtenaw County Sheriff Deputies" mounted patrol. What happened to them? I was standing at the corner of E. Forest and N. River and they didn't ride by. :-(

Really good pics, but one small typo. There is no such thing as an "Ypsilanti Sheriff Deputy".

I'm so glad to see these images! My family was at the start of the parade route and I was frustrated that other than us, only ONE other person saluted/applauded the Vets in the parade. I was really starting to wonder where the respect was, especially after the very loud woman came stumbling down Michigan Ave. in her pajamas and housecoat.

Pajamas and housecoat? We call that local color. :^)

Memorial Day is usually a more subdued occasion. Also, in the USA we are a government by the people and for the people. Civilians do not salute the military.

I love my Ypsi. Why doesn't Ann Arbor have parades like Ypsi does. If I'm not mistaken Ypsi used to have one of the biggest 4th of July parades in Michigan. Keep up the good work Ypsi.

Ypsi STILL has a big parade on the 4th of July! It is one of the oldest too.

We missed the entire parade because, as usual, annarbor.com had incorrect information as to where the paread staged, not on Catherine as reported. The information on this site had us believing the parade started a block from our home. INCORRECT as usual!! If you cannot get something like a parade route correct, why would I believe you have any creditability for an important story?? This "publication" is useless!!

ypsidog, sorry you missed the parade. We reported what we were told at Ypsilanti City Hall. No route was posted online.

Article says "near Catherine"; try almost 2-3 blocks away in a parking lot. Close but no cigar.
