Ypsilanti police arrest 'person of interest' in sexual assault, break-in

By Amalie Nash

Ypsilanti police arrested a man considered to be a person of interest in a sexual assault and home invasion this morning.

Police say the man is under investigation for both this morning's incident and other home invasions. No further details were provided.

A 22-year-old Eastern Michigan University student told police she awoke at 10:30 a.m. to find a stranger in her residence in the 600 block of West Cross Street. The woman said the man sexually assaulted her at knifepoint, police said.

Officers arrested a man in the area on unrelated charges, and he's being questioned in the incident, police said. The man will remain in custody as the investigation continues, according to a police press release.

The attacker was described as black, 6 feet tall, 180 pounds, in his late 20s or early 30s. He was wearing a white tank top and white T-shirt.

Anyone with information can call Ypsilanti police at 734-483-9510.

I live within a couple blocks on West Cross as well. I've always felt comforted that I am on a main drag where criminals are less likely to commit their crimes, and police more likely to be driving by, but I guess that was a false security. Best advice you can give anyone: *SECURE* ALL ENTRIES! (This means windows and any other opening to your house)

I agree Malorie, my girlfriend is moving into that area in the fall and this kind of stuff just terrifies me. I myself live half a block up the street on cross and see YPD driving by countless times night in and night out with their sirens blaring. Ypsilanti has really become awful and has gotten worse and worse each year.
