Ypsilanti police investigate attempted home invasion this morning

By Lee Higgins

Ypsilanti police are investigating an attempted home invasion this morning in the 1400 block of North Huron River Drive, a police incident log said.

A woman heard bells on her front door jingling for 30 minutes to an hour and went downstairs at about 3 a.m., the log said. That's when the doorbell rang.

She didn't see anyone outside, then walked to the bathroom and found the blinds on the window were up.

As she was closing the blinds and locking the window, she saw a man looking inside. He then ran east on the street.

Nothing was taken from the house, but officers found pry marks on the front door, the log said.

@willmiller82, you really should do some more research on your self defense options. Batons are a really great idea BUT they require some training to use effectively as well as the space to swing it. Against certain people (i.e. large and or muscular) batons can be less than effective. Moreover, private ownership and more importantly use of them is a gray area in the law and may play against you should you be forced to use it. Kudos for considering your safety and your loved ones. There are classes in the use of Mace/OC and I highly recommend you consider taking the training. In the meantime also consider all/other options regarding your personal protection, by that I mean the greatest weapon is your mind. Learn more and be aware. Good luck and be safe.

Im going down to harrys army surplus this afternoon to pick up some suplies to protect my family. Some mace for my girlfriend and a retractable baton for myself. They wont help much if the perp has a gun but its better than nothing.

I don't think John Galt is advocating "apprehending" the hoodlums. Anyone breaking into his house will be picked up by the coroners van. I'm with Vernice on this one...John Galt to the rescue!

John Galt- You sound pretty tough! Can I just call you if someone's breaking into my home?

John Galt, this isn't "Home Alone." How do you propose we apprehend the hoodlums once they enter?

...I should also have mentioned to make sure your children or others staying with you are made aware of the 2x4s or wooden dowels in the event of a fire, etc. They aren't always easy to see.

Homeowners need to be willing and able to defend their own home. If people are now starting to break-in while residents are home, things are getting more dangerous--crooks must feel that we will not take appropriate steps. Calling the police is not an option if you and the family are confronted by these hoodlums. Cooperating and "playing dead" hoping they decide not to harm you is not an option. I look forward to hear future articles about successful home defense---with the police called to pick-up the perpetrators.

Adding to Zollar's post, cut 2x4s or similar wooden dowels to place in the track of sliding glass doors at night... and always make sure the 12 ga "home defender" is ready to go;)

Why didn't she call the police if she heard bells for 30 minutes?

Folks, before you retire at night. Take a walk tru your house and be sure all windows and doors are locked tight.Go to your local hardware or home center, spend a few bucks and get more secure locks ss needed.

Since my last remarks were removed advocating the use of buckshot. Let me retract the statement. Instead, get a big trained guard dog.

@ Dog Lover: I was thinking marks from a crowbar or similar. That's not so unusual when home invasions are concerned.

This sounds like something out of a horror movie but I'm curious why it took the victim so long to check it out. And what do "pry marks" mean!? Did the guy have a hook for a hand? Claws?
