Ypsilanti police investigate several car break-ins

By Lee Higgins

Ypsilanti police are investigating three car break-ins reported Wednesday morning on Cross Street, a police incident log said.

The break-ins occurred between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m.

Two were reported in the 900 block of West Cross Street, while the other was reported in the 100 block of East Cross Street.

Items including a phone, computer and wallet were stolen, the log said.

Just over a year ago, my car was stolen from my driveway. The doors were locked, windows were up, nothing was in the car. There are ways to quickly open a car without keys or breaking a window. I agree, it may be foolish to leave things in your car, or doors unlocked, but if I leave my doors unlocked, windows down, and my wallet full of cash on the seat, that doesn't make it any less of a crime to take it. It's still not yours. Which, by the way, is just an assumption you made. While sometimes intelligence can prevent it, stupidity is not a prerequisite to criminal victimization.

Here's two more this month too. "Ypsilanti police investigate car break-in on North Washington Street" http://www.annarbor.com/news/crime/ypsilanti-police-investigate-car-break-in-on-north-washington-street/ Quote from above article: "A man told police he returned to his car to find one of its windows was broken and his stereo was missing, according to the log." "Car break-in on Perrin Street in Ypsilanti under investigation" http://www.annarbor.com/news/crime/car-break-in-on-perrin-street-in-ypsilanti-under-investigation/ Quote from above article: "Two empty purses, a jacket and $300 were taken after the front passenger side window of a 2009 Ford Focus was broken, the log said."

@dading - I guess several of the articles on this website are completely false then and have no business quoting the police log. "Thieves smash car windows, steal GPS units in Ann Arbor Township" http://www.annarbor.com/news/crime/thieves-smash-car-windows-steal-gps-units-in-ann-arbor-township/ or "Ypsilanti police investigate auto break-in on West Cross Street" http://www.annarbor.com/news/crime/ypsilanti-police-investigate-auto-break-in/ Quote from second article: "A brick was thrown through a passenger side window of a 2001 Kia Sportage, and a purse containing $300 was taken, the log said. " These reports are both within the last two weeks. Just because your deputy buddy has never made a report of a smashed window break-in, doesn't mean other officers haven't.

@malorie, we had a deputy at our neighborhood watch meeting this week. he's been a deputy for 16 years. he told our group he has yet to make a report of a window being smashed to steal things from inside a car......and yes, who leaves these things in plain view overnight? if at all. that's just asking for trouble. leave your things out in plain sight and tell me what happened?

Who leaves their phone, wallet, or computer in their car at nite? I agree with Dading here. Don't make yourself a target leaving valuables in your vehicle. Simple as that.

@dading - I should inform you that locking your doors is not enough to prevent a thief from getting access to your car. Many recent reports of car break-ins in the area have involved the use of a large rock, brick, or other heavy object to smash a window to gain access. Looks like the best bet is simply to not leave anything you value in your car.

I've seen soooo many reports of break-ins and robberies within a few block radius of my house. I was happy to see an officer driving down North Adams last night as I walked from the bus stop to my house on West Cross. I hope the YPD continues to give the area attention, even with its limited resources.

i'm not saying it was right. these are crimes of opportunity. if your door is unlocked and mine is locked (or viceversa) guess who won't have to worry about leaving their stuff out anymore? you won't have your stuff to lock up the next time... -dading!

Why should that really matter? It wasn't theirs to take regardless if the stuff was in plan view or unlocked - although a bit stupid to leave one's stuff like that - but, it's still wrong to steal regardless of how easy it was.

are these actual BREAK ins or were the cars left unlocked w/these items in plain view?
