Ypsilanti Public Schools athletic director outlines $50,000 in cuts; no team sports to be eliminated
Ypsilanti Public Schools Athletic Director Charles Fuller presented the school board with a plan Monday that includes $50,000 in reductions for the spring and fall seasons without cutting any sports.
Spring and fall coaches at the high school and middle schools will take pay cuts for a savings of more than $30,000 each season.
The Ypsilanti school district is considering cuts to athletics, such as slashing the equipment and supply budgets.

The athletic trainer’s position will be cut in the fall, which will save the department $23,590. Fuller said he'll ask student trainers from Eastern Michigan University to fill in.
Fuller also slashed equipment and supply budgets at the high school and middle schools for the spring season for a savings of $15,000.
Transportation for club sports - lacrosse and bowling - and weekend transportation to athletic events also will be cut for the fall season.
Fuller also reduced the allotment for “extra duty” pay, which includes timers at track meets and scorekeepers, by $8,000 for the spring season.
Several board members praised Fuller for making the reductions while keeping the athletic department in tact. Superintendent Dedrick Martin said he's pleased to see the coaches sacrificing their pay to prevent the elimination of any sports.
“These coaches are stepping up and taking the hit so the kids don’t have to,” he said.
