Ypsilanti shooting victim recovers as police investigation continues

By Heidi Fenton

Previous story: One man taken to hospital following shooting in Ypsilanti

A 29-year-old Ypsilanti man suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen was in surgery at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Monday afternoon and is expected to recover from his injuries, Ypsilanti Police Sgt. Troy Fulton said.

Authorities responded about 11:33 a.m. Monday to reports of a shooting on Harriet Street.

Fulton said a man was riding his bicycle when he was shot by a suspect aiming from inside a vehicle. The victim suffered a single gunshot wound to the right side of his stomach and rode on his bicycle from Harriet Street to Monroe Street after being injured, police said.

On Monday afternoon, a man who identified himself as a relative of the victim, recalled the man coming up the street and telling of his wound. The relative declined to give his name because police have not yet made an arrest.

The man said the victim rode up to a Monroe Street house and said he thought he had been shot. The relative lifted the man’s shirt and immediately saw a bullet wound, he said.

The man calmed the victim down as someone nearby called police dispatchers.

Hours earlier, late Sunday night, the relative and victim were at a neighborhood house when a fight broke out among a large group of people gathered inside. The victim was present there as a bystander, the relative said, and he worried the victim may have somehow been targeted before Monday’s shooting.

Fulton said a police investigation continues and authorities, so far, have struggled to get information from the victim.

Police do not believe the shooting is gang-related, though it does not appear to be random, Fulton said.

Anyone who may have further information is asked to contact Ypsilanti Police Det. Joe Yuhas at (734)368-8780 or (734)482-9872.

That area seems to be a dangerous part of Ypsi.

"Fulton said a police investigation continues and authorities, so far, have struggled to get information from the victim." I think it's a shame that the victim is not forthcoming. I think if he doesn't help them, they should charge him with obstruction. You have to help them out if you want the area to improve. And the police should do everything they can to keep him from being a stumbling block to solving this as well as discouraging other people from not assisting in the future.

Gotta wonder who is paying for the expensive surgery for gunshot victims; somehow I doubt these folks carry health insurance. And we wonder why our insurance premiums keep increasing exponentially every year paying for more and more mayhem.
