Ypsilanti Township man accused of fracturing baby's ribs, records show

By Lee Higgins

An arrest warrant has been issued for an Ypsilanti Township man accused of squeezing his 3-month-old daughter so hard he fractured her ribs, Washtenaw County Court records show.

Charles J. Wasson, 30, is charged with first-degree child abuse and second-degree child abuse, according to a felony complaint filed in 14-A District Court.

He is expected to turn himself in soon, said Derrick Jackson, spokesman for the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department.

Attempts to reach Wasson this afternoon were unsuccessful. One of his family members declined to comment today.

If convicted of the charges, Wasson faces up to 15 years in prison.

Wasson is accused of abusing his daughter at his Essex Drive home between Jan. 1 and Feb. 28, court records show. According to the complaint, Wasson squeezed “her around the stomach, causing several lateral rib fractures.”

Officials at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital notified authorities March 10 after the baby was brought to the hospital by her parents with the rib injuries and a fractured arm, Jackson said.

Jackson said he didn't know what hospital officials were originally told about how the baby was injured. Children's Protective Services also is involved in the case, he said. Jackson said he does not know who now has custody of the baby.

To Mr. Roscoe911 I also find it difficult to believe what you are saying. It said that the baby had broken ribs. Now get your stories straight.

My first thought was that it sounded like Brittle Bone Disease. I was trying to imagine how hard one would have to squeeze an infant to break its little ribs. It seems to me that the pressure alone would cause laceration if the liver which in turn would cause a fatal hemorrage, if not suffocation or cardiac arrest. Has there been an update to this story? Roscoe911 stated that the baby had been diagnosed with BBD. If there is an update, please print it. It would clear the air and put the matter to rest.

What this country needs is another with the likes of "Maximum John Wood" the judge who gave out the maximum sentence for ALL persons brought before him as a sitting judge Probation was out of his realm of thinking. On a sadder note his harshness cost him his life, but while on the bench he stuck it to all persons before him. If you were a child abuser,God have mercy on your sole you got the max, plus

Oh sbbuilder! How horrible! I can only hope the inmates DO take care of such people. Poor babies...and then they will be teens and adults, still needing care forever. How horrible and beyond sad.

Years ago I remodelled a group home in Farmington Hills filled with infants/toddlers with permanent brain damage from being shaken, slammed up against walls, etc. Bunnyabbot, it does make your heart ache. The memory still does. Almost as sad is that the children were seldom visited by family members (those not in prison for perpetrating the crime). The staff were angels, and were protective as pit bulls to those kids.

"If convicted of the charges, Wasson faces up to 15 years in prison." assuming he is found guilty.... If it was up to me he would serve every minute of the 15 years. Then as a reminder to behave, we the people should fracture several of his ribs and his arm on the way out the prison door. But it ain't up to me.
