Ypsilanti Township teenager drowns in Belleville Lake

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Van Buren Township police are investigating what factors may have led to the drowning of a 14-year-old Ypsilanti Township boy in Belleville Lake Wednesday, the Detroit Free Press reports.

The boy, whose name has not been released, was swimming with a cousin - also a teenager - when he drowned at about 3:15 p.m. in the lake near I-94 east of Rawsonville Road, Lt. Ken Floro told the Free Press.

A dive team searched for an hour and found the boy in 8 feet of water and 200 feet from shore, according to the Free Press.

Officials say the water temperature wasn't a factor, and they're investigating whether water currents were a factor and how much swimming experience the boy had.
