Ypsilanti woman escapes from man who tried to grab her in parking lot, police say

By AnnArbor.com Staff

A 19-year-old woman was able to escape from a man who tried to grab her Saturday by kneeing him in the groin, according to an Ypsilanti Police Department media summary.

The woman told police she was approached by a man in the parking lot of her apartment building in the 200 block of Ballard Street on Saturday, and the man tried to talk to her. When she indicated she didn't want to engage with him, the man grabbed her by her shoulders and slapped her face.

She was able to escape after kneeing him and running to her car, the summary said.

Police are still investigating, and no other information was available Sunday. Anyone with information may call the police department at 734-483-9510.

She should be celebrated for keeping her cool and nailing the bastard. Sometimes good parenting pays off. In other cases, like the assailant, it is totally missing.

About getting (or providing) descriptions of suspects: this is highly dependent on the victim's ability to notice detail under stress. It's proven that such fear-induced stress creates tunnel vision and that pretty much obliterates one's ability to notice important descriptive features. One tip: "look from inside out" - meaning try to see what shirt is worn if a coat is worn by the assailant: criminals fleeing on foot will often shuck off outer clothing, sometimes even have another coat stashed nearby to change into. Also: notice shoes - for the same reason, shoes are seldom discarded by fleeing criminals. It is recommended that we practice observing people and (to ourselves) reporting our own observations. Try being a cop who's just gotten a description consisting of "Man, average height, dark clothing, hair a little long, etc." - making the cop's job virtually impossible. As for news reports lacking such descriptions: often as not, there is no meaningful description available for the above reasons. Good reaction by this nearly victimized young woman: whatever defensive action can be taken when under attack is better than none and it certainly seems to have worked in this case. As for CPLs: lets remember that this woman's age (19) would prevent her obtaining one (in addition to other things we know nothing about). Also, the attacker had taken the initiative and was "slapping face" close to her, so drawing a gun from concealment under those conditions is- dicey. Actually - kneeing him was probably the best option.

@Ricki, HardWorker: Police may well have a description. This article came straight out of the evening police report summary, not from any reporters contacting the police of victim. In traditional newspapers, this would be covered in the "Crime Blotter" column. In aa.com, this constitutes a news story because they can attach a sensational headline to it.

This story does not surprise me at all! Women should carry mace at all times or get a Concealed Pistol License. Especially, if you live in or around Ypsi! I was in class at EMU a few weeks ago and over heard a girl talking about how a group of men did the same thing to her in Ypsi the night before.

Sure would be helpful if the police would provide a description of the assailant.

=D =D Wait wait! Did any of those men had a groin? =D =D =D Seriously, a description of that criminal would certainly help.
