50 headstones vandalized at Highland Cemetery in Ypsilanti

Police say 50 headstones were damaged sometime over the weekend at Highland Cemetery in Ypsilanti.

Fifty headstones were vandalized over the weekend at Highland Cemetery in Ypsilanti.
An employee from the cemetery, at 943 N. River St., said the damage is not permanent, but trash was strewn across some of the headstones. The cemetery is in the process of notifying the families.
The Ypsilanti Police Department said no further information was available about the incident.

Please Katrice: a little more information. Highland is a remarkably beautiful cemetary with an awesome layout and 19th century memorials.

I love that cemetery. I have relatives buried there. I am so saddened because I love just walking through there from time to time. Hope they get caught soon, very soon.

These people desecrated the resting spot of 50 people, what does it matter if it was litter or vandalism, neither one is right. Most likely teenagers who have yet to come to terms with the fact they are not immortal.

As a teen we never were in the after school stuff, yuck, we wanted out of there. Still we had respect for the dead. Maybe cause we knew we be dead one day. Today kids are kept in the dark about too many things and are told no matter what you are loved and will be successful and all that other rosy stuff

I'm confused too. Vandalize means "to destroy or damage (something) by an act of vandalism". The story states "but trash was strewn across some of the headstones" Littering is a whole different event. Could the writer of this peace provide further information as to how they are using the word and what exactly happened?

Police could not describe the extent of the damage and beyond what the cemetery worker described, they would not release any further information.

I'm curious; was the vandalism more serious than just trash being spread around? As bad as that is, it's quite different than actually damaging the headstones.
