Bike thieves punch 15-year-old victim in face

By Paula Gardner

Ypsilanti police are searching for two teenagers who stole a bicycle and watch from their teenage victim at about 2 p.m. Saturday near Prospect Park.

A 15-year-old boy told police he was walking with his bike in the park on the city's east side when the two thieves approached him, demanding that he give them the bike.

He refused, and they responded by punching him in the face. They took the bike and his wristwatch.

The suspects are both described as teens. One is heavy-set, about 5-feet, 10 inches tall, with a dark complexion and short hair.

APB: Be on the lookout for two bike thieves. One is heavy-set, about 5-feet, 10 inches tall, with a dark complexion and short hair. The other one isn't.

"One is heavy-set, about 5-feet, 10 inches tall, with a dark complexion and short hair." It's kind of strange that there is a description for only one of the thugs. How about the other guy? Or didn't the other guy come with a description? I agree that this is pretty much useless information unless the point is only to reenforce the fear people have about violent crime cropping up more and more as time passes.

"The suspects are both described as teens. One is heavy-set, about 5-feet, 10 inches tall, with a dark complexion and short hair." So were they Italians? Arabs, Blacks, Hispanics, Asian, what? This is the 2nd story in the past few days where a crime has taken place and the description of the suspects leaves me suspecting everybody. This happens with disturbing regularity and goes against the whole purpose of informing the public. I understand that the police provide incomplete details but really, if they don't take these crimes seriously enough to publish an accurate description then why even bother? It does no good to just tell people "Something bad happened here", when really the police need our help to catch these goons to make them pay. I have noticed I don't get NIXLE texts about crimes anymore but WCSO sure does send me traffic updates with regularity. Judging from what I read daily in the news the crime rate hasn't suddenly dropped to zero. It really seems to me that the law enforcement around here whether city or county really only pay lip service to public involvment in matters of public safety.
