Decrease in enrollment for Ypsilanti schools may be smaller than anticipated
Preliminary enrollment numbers could signal good news for Ypsilanti Public Schools.
District spokeswoman Emma Jackson said Ypsilanti is projecting it will have 3,737 students enrolled for the 2010-11 school year. The district budgeted for 3,725 students this year, a decrease of about 50 from the year before.
“We’re in good standing as far as what we had budgeted for,” Jackson said. “We always want to be in a more positive bracket than what we had anticipated.”
If the figure is accurate after count day on Sept. 29, the Ypsilanti district could have about $94,000 added into its general fund budget from state per pupil funding.
Jackson said it's still possible for the district to gain or lose students during the next week or so as students who haven't shown up for class are taken out of the count.
“We always want to gain students, and we might still do that,” she said. “We might go from a negative to a positive before count day and could climb back to what we were at.”
