A large party in Ypsilanti Township turned violent Sunday night when one man cut another with a knife and then was severely beaten after he tried to run away and a group of people chased and caught him.

The 25-year-old Ypsilanti Township man was in critical condition at an area hospital, Washtenaw County sheriff's officials said.

Deputies said two men were fighting outside a large party in the 1500 block of Wismer Street in Ypsilanti Township, when the 25-year-old man pulled out a knife and cut a 28-year-old Ypsilanti Township man before attempting to flee the area on foot.

A group of people then chased the 25-year-old and caught him, beating him until he was unconscious and causing significant injury, deputies said.

Sheriff’s deputies responded at 3:30 a.m. Sunday and discovered the two injured men. They were both transported to a local hospital, where they were treated for their injuries.

The 28-year-old man was released from the hospital and then taken into custody for his role in the fight, deputies said. He’s lodged in the Washtenaw County Jail awaiting arraignment.

The 25-year-old man remains in critical condition due to head trauma. Police are not saying to which hospital he was admitted.

The identities of the people who beat the 25-year-old man are not known, sheriff’s officials said Tuesday.

Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to call the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office anonymous tip line at 734-973-7711 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800 SPEAK UP (773-2587).
