Eastern Michigan University student will face sexual assault charges in circuit court

By Heidi Fenton

A 19-year-old woman who told police she was sexually assaulted by a male acquaintance in an Eastern Michigan University dorm room testified in court this week the two had been laughing in a lecture shortly before the attack.

Michael Denson told her “he did not want to be alone” after that lecture, she said, and she asked: “Do you want to hang out?” The two freshmen went back to her dorm room around 3 p.m. April 11.

The victim’s name is being withheld because AnnArbor.com typically does not identify victims of sexual assaults.

Denson is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct and third-degree criminal sexual conduct after the woman told police he assaulted her in the minutes that followed. District Court Judge Richard Conlin on Tuesday found there was enough evidence to order Denson to stand trial.

“It seemed like he was not even listening, like he was in his own zone and would do whatever he wanted,” the woman said of the alleged assault.

Under questioning by Assistant Washtenaw County Prosecutor Blake Hatlem, the woman said Denson,18, digitally penetrated her and left her bleeding and suffering severe pain for weeks.

The woman stated that she texted a friend while Denson was in her room but could not call out for help because her two roommates were gone that afternoon. The text message she sent was not enough for her friend to find her, she said.

“He was reading over my shoulders and I didn’t want to make it blatantly obvious that something was wrong,” she said in court, referring to Denson.

Under cross examination by Denson’s attorney, Leon Weiss, the woman told police she was texting photos of a sexual nature to three other men in the weeks before the attack. Weiss questioned how prosecutors could say the woman’s injuries definitely were the result of Denson’s actions and not the other sexually related activity she referred to in the text messages.

“There is no medical evidence that the injuries she submitted she had came from my client. You would have to draw about four inferences there,” he said.

A pretrial hearing in the case is scheduled for Aug. 23.

It is so sad that she had to go through this. Unfortunately many young adults are too trusting of others and allow them to get too close before really knowing them.

@obviouscomment, Ummmm Michael Denson hasn't been found guilty... In fact the story reports "There is no medical evidence that the injuries she submitted she had came from my client (Michael Denson)". So uhhhh lets not forget that two people are going through a tough time right now. I mean its not like Michael's name is being dragged through the mud and its not like his picture is showing up in the local newspaper. And its not like people are already assuming he's guilty or anything. *cough* But yea, it's certainly terrible the girl had to go through this.....

This story doesn't read like a cut-and-dried case. I'd withhold sympathy and convictions just yet.
