Utility work begins Monday on Golfside Road

By Lisa Allmendinger

Motorists are advised to seek an alternate route beginning Monday as there will be lane closures on Golfside Road between Packard Road and Clark Road for water main and sanitary sewer work.

The project is part of a joint venture with the Ypsilanti Community Utilities Authority.

A minimum of one lane in each direction will be maintained, and delays are expected during construction although access for residents, businesses and deliveries will be maintained.

The Golfside Road Improvement project involves a “road diet,” resurfacing the roadway and converting the lane configuration from four lanes to three lanes with one lane in each direction, a center left turn lane, and bike lanes on both sides of the road. Currently, there are two northbound and two southbound lanes.

Golfside Road between Packard and Clark roads will be milled and resurfaced in addition to the sanitary sewer work. The $1.1 million project is expected to continue through July, and the lane closures are expected until further notice.

Yeah I had the unfortunate pleasure of driving that stretch of road this weekend and this is a project that is sorely needed!

Why would a road need a diet? Instead of a bike lane there, anyone who spends any time around there knows what is really needed is a sidewalk. Many people walk along that road on dirt paths. And a center left turn lane? Well, that will be a pretty mess with all those entrances to the apartments and doctors' offices, tennis club, bank, daycare, etc. How will drivers decide which car gets to use the center turn lane to turn into the apartments or the tennis club; pretty sure the one lane left for through traffic will be completely stopped because of those situations.

People complain because the road is in terrible condition ...they want to do work to make it better with means a temporary inconvenience for most but a long term solution ...people still complain..I don't get it

Because they will be losing a lane of traffic in both directions. Post CCC classes, it gets rather busy there and this will cause a wicked bottle neck.

While the road needs resurfacing, it is a terrible idea to make Golfside one lane each way. If anyone has driven this stretch during morning and afternoon rush hour they have witnessed traffic backed up at both Packard and at Washtenaw. To move to only one lane means even more traffic will be backed. I'm sure businesses on this stretch of road will enjoy the lost business as people bypass this intersection permanently and not just for construction. Horrible idea all the way around.

About time they did something with that stretch of rough road between Packard and Washtenaw. Terrible to have to drive it.
