Fire damages house on Emerick Street in Ypsilanti, but residents escaped major injuries

By Jen Eyer

An early morning house fire in the 400 block of Emerick Street in Ypsilanti caused $15,000 in damage, but residents escaped with only minor injuries.

When City of Ypsilanti and Ypsilanti Township firefighters arrived on the scene at about 2 a.m., all occupants were out of the house, said Ypsilanti fire Lt. Scott Maddison.

"One resident suffered minor burn injuries that did not require transport to the hospital," Maddison said. "He was injured attempting to put the fire out."

Maddison said firefighters rescued a cat and dog from the burning building. He said he did not immediately know how many people live at the residence.

About 25 percent of the house burned, Maddison said, and the cause of fire is under investigation.

Three Red Cross volunteers responded to the fire and assisted two individuals with food, clothing and lodging, according to the Washtenaw County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

blazinbill Never ceases to amaze me how easy it is to place a city's woes on "the politicians". Only those who choose to be ignorant of the terrible revenue declines and impending doom of the Water Street debt could make such an outlandish statement. Pull your head out of the sand and look at the cuts in police, fire, DPW, administration, recreation, etc. It's so easy to sit back and criticize without actually adding up revenues and expenses. No one, politicians included, ever wants to see a death. Every one of them is trying to conserve, preserve and seek inter-governmental cooperative solutions. So next time think before you spout!

Matti......Your information that Ypsilanti and Ypsilanti Township are not cutting their department staffing is misleading and wrong. Both departments have already cut staffing to the bare bones and cutting any further would make it impossible to even fight a fire. The politicians in the City of Ypsi and in the Township are all self serving and could not care less how dangerous it is for the firefighters to fight fire the way they are forced to currently....the only way it will ever change is when somebody dies in a fire. Hopefully, it won't be a firefighter or an innocent citizen but, instead will be one of the politicians, who in their infinite wizdom, cut staffing below a safe level. Most all fire departments are in the same understaffing boat....not just Ann Arbor.

The Ypis and Ypsi Twp. are not cutting their firefighting force while Ann Arbor is. So, Ann Arbor gets a lot of comments.
