First 'ArtoberFest' to showcase local artists in Ypsilanti

By Tom Perkins

The Downtown Association of Ypsilanti is combining the beer and brats of Oktoberfest with the area's creative talent in the inaugural "ArtoberFest."

The event features around 20 vendors and will take place at Pub 13 at 13 North Washington street in downtown Ypsilanti from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today.

Admission is free, and the bar will be offering a brat and kraut special along with a $5 beer tasting special. Around 20 vendors from Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor will sell jewelery, photography, clothes, paintings and much more. Each vendor will have two small tables full of their products, and Dave Heikkinen, one of the event's organizers. He expects an art fair atmosphere.

"It's kind of a place to wander on in and see the different vendors sand see what's there," Heikkinen said. "There will be a variety of people, food and drinks and it’s meant to be a festive, fun day."

Heikkinen said Pub 13 comes equipped with plenty of televisions, so sports fans won't miss the game. Proceeds from the vendors - who paid a $10 free for their tables - benefit DAY.
