Graduates from all five colleges at Eastern Michigan University took part in the winter commencement ceremony Sunday, punctuating personal milestones and commemorating years of hard work, late nights and close bonds with friends.
Hundreds of graduates donned caps and gowns and filled the floor of EMU's Convocation Center, where they sang the EMU Alma Mater, posed for photographs, received their diplomas and hugged colleagues, friends and family members.
During the opening remarks by Roy E. Wilbanks, chairman of the university's Board of Regents, a moment of silence was held for Julia Niswender, a 23 year-old EMU student whose death last week police are treating as a possible homicide.
