Man assaulted and dog killed during Saturday night altercation in West Willow

By Kyle Feldscher

A man was sent to the hospital and a dog was killed in a shooting in Ypsilanti Township Saturday night, and police say they have one man in custody.

Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Derrick Jackson said deputies responded to Mary Catherine Street and Jeff Avenue Saturday night for a report of shots fired and one man injured. When deputies arrived, they found one man with a cut on his head and a dog that had been shot, Jackson said.

The department did not release any information on the shooting through their Nixle alerts or in any information to media outlets until Thursday. Jackson said it was “a matter of circumstance” that the sheriff’s office had not released any information regarding the incident in West Willow until Thursday.

Jackson said it appeared that the man had been injured in an altercation with at least one suspect and had a laceration on his head. He said the man was transported by Huron Valley Ambulance to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

HVA spokesperson Joyce Williams confirmed the ambulance service was sent to Mary Catherine Street for a report of a gunshot wound. She said the man was in stable condition. She could not release what hospital the man was taken to because of the on-going investigation, she said.

Jackson said police have one person in custody in connection with the incident. He said he was going to check with sheriff’s office detectives for any more details on the incident that could be released.

The Ypsilanti Township Fire Department also made an emergency medical service run at 11:51 p.m. Saturday to Mary Catherine Street, according to fire department officials.

Mike Radzik, director of police services for Ypsilanti Township, said sheriff’s officials had not notified him about the incident when he was reached by AnnArbor.com on Thursday.

A bystander said the getaway vehicle struck at least one more vehicle on a nearby street.

A person who lives on Jeff Avenue near the incident said he heard some shots at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday night, but didn’t go outside to see what had happened. The neighbor said it was a while before he saw lights from police vehicles showing up in the neighborhood, but otherwise had no information about the incident.

Don't you just love the statement.... "it was a matter of circumstance that the Sheriff's dept. had not released any information" of this incident until Thursday. What exactly does that mean, a matter of circumstance? There's a lot of crime in West Willow that is going unreported. A neighbor of mine was robbed on Sept. 30th and there was no Nixle alert or report on AnnArbor.com. Home invasions and thefts from garages have been going on all summer. As well as property damage by juveniles. Why is it that we neighbors have to learn by word of mouth what's going on in our community? Instead of the crimes being reported we get the feel good stories of ex gang bangers turning their life around. Great! That's good but not only did they have that story on TV nightly news but it got play on AnnArbor.com several times over the summer. What I want to see and hear is the honest truth about what is going on in the neighborhood when it happens and within a reasonable length of time. We never get all the facts but not reporting it makes me think the Sheriff's dept. is trying to cover it up and therefore make the dept. look like it's cleaned up West Willow and there is no crime to report. Let's get real.

Yes, its the great west willow cover up. You have absolutely got to be kidding..... believe it or not, the west willow is not the only neighborhood in the county. Maybe the had something to do elsewhere for a change and yet another issue in the we had to wait a couple minutes. Get real, a cover up.

What would suggest they should have done Thomas, other than go outside and get shot?

What is the point of the last paragraph? The resident heard the shots, didn't go outside, didn't call the cops. One, shame on them. And two, what's the point of even including their cowardness in the story?

If someone posted that as a comment here, the ridiculous mods would delete it as unconfirmed.

A dog shot and killed makes me sick! If the suspect is charged with both counts, he should be charged (big time).

I knew it was only a matter of time until someone posted concerning the dog with NO mention of the shooting victim!
