Police: Woman hit with frying pan, sprayed with chemical in dispute over parking space

By Kyle Feldscher

A woman and her daughter were arrested Thursday afternoon after they hit a woman with a frying pan and sprayed her with a “chemical agent” during an argument about a parking spot, police said.

Ypsilanti_police_badge.jpg
Ypsilanti police responded at 1:40 p.m. Thursday to the 200 block of Ferris Street after a 31-year-old woman reported she was assaulted by the two women. Police said the women were arguing over a parking spot.

The 31-year-old woman was hit with a frying pan and sprayed with a chemical agent, police said. They did not specify what type of chemical agent was used.

The 31-year-old woman was transported to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The 34-year-old woman and her 19-year-old daughter were both arrested and taken to the Washtenaw County Jail. Police said they had had previous disagreements with the other woman.

No felony charges were filed as of 10:30 a.m. Friday morning.

Almost nice when confrontation doesn't involve a gun and a homicide. Easier to kid about, too. Firearms are the number one homicide weapon. Maybe some day there won't be any and people will have to duke it out with frying pans or resort to calling the law.

All jokes aside, disputes over parking spaces in the United States can quickly escalate. I was in at least one myself that ended up involving punches thrown.

@ Ann English: I've actually seen that happen.

Ann English

Sun, Apr 21, 2013 : 12:10 a.m.

I've heard of at least one man who would always STRADDLE two parking places at work, for he didn't want any scratches on his car from those parked on either side of him. But you'd think that parking place disputes would be more likely to take place in the winter, when piles of plowed snow take up space in some parking spaces, so there are fewer parking places available for cars.

1) So they don't want to tell us the "chemical agent" was Pam, I'd imagine. Probably because that would constitute free advertising? 2) I would think only in Ann Arbor would that zealous a reaction to having a parking place swiped take place. 3) An early Griswold would probably really really hurt. Yow!

All kidding aside, it's interesting to note that according to FBI statistics, more homicides are committed in this country by blunt objects, like the frying pan in this story, than with rifles of any kind. http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2011/crime-in-the-u.s.-2011/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-8

Laurie Barrett

Maybe rifles aren't more common a homicide weapon than blunt trauma items, but the far-and-away King of homicide weapons in the good ole USA is firearms. That's just common knowledge and common sense.

Wow...I don't get all of the negative votes for Ms. Rodriguez. Thank you for sharing your story of success. I don't really know anyone that wishes to be a teen parent--life just happens and people have to make the best with what they have. That being said, the above mother-daughter duo doesn't exactly sound like they're striving for much, but then again stereotyping is not really fair to anyone.

I find your insinuating comment so typical. When my mother was 34, I was also 19. She was a teen parent who did the best she could and luckily had the support of her family. It is 16 years later, and I have no children, a college degree and teach as my profession. AND, I choose to live in Ypsilanti, and love it here. Don't believe all the generalizations and stereotypes you read here daily. Please don't let this be your only news source.

Any word on the type of pan? Those cheap non-stick pans, with their plastic handles and pop rivets, just do not hold up. Give me some vintage cast iron. Not that Lodge junk. But an early Griswold, or an Erie - then we're talking. It would also be interesting to know the nature of the dispute. Was someone backing into the spot, etc.

Ann English

Sat, Apr 20, 2013 : 11:56 p.m.

Good suggestion you make for the setting. Sounds like parallel parking when you say, "backing into the spot". I know Adams Street better than Washington Street, where this happened. Looking east on Ferris Street from Adams, appears to be all residential. But then, I don't know how far some people choose to park if they want to go to the Post Office at Ferris and Adams. Certainly the funeral home has ample parking.
