Ypsilanti High School student struck by car that left scene

By Lee Higgins

An Ypsilanti High School student who was crossing Packard Road near the high school this afternoon was struck by a car that left the scene before the driver later parked and called 911, Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies said.

The 18-year-old male student suffered a broken arm, cuts and other injuries in the accident at 4:20 p.m. and was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, sheriff's department spokesman Derrick Jackson said.

Jackson said the male driver ultimately parked and called 911, but Jackson did not have details about how far the driver traveled after the collision.

The car was traveling west on Packard Road when the incident occurred, Jackson said. Investigators are currently interviewing the driver, deputies said.

No other details were available.

Anyone with information can call the sheriff department's tip line at (734) 973-7711.

Wow that sure is a lot of information that isn't presented in the story. Wouldn't it be nice if AA.com either verified and updated their story or took down the comment until they did? Nah that'd make too much sense.

You people do not know the facts, why even comment. The driver stopped immediately and spoke with the young man who said it was his own fault for running out in front of the cars and said he was okay. The man dodged the first car which blocked him from the second driver's sight. The driver whom hit the man could not have seen him until it was too late - imagine if this happened to you. Yes, maybe the driver should have stayed and waited for the police to show up but the man who was hit was proceeding toward a bus and was not concerned himself. He told the driver he did not want assistance. What was the driver to do - hold him down to call the police? It wasn't until the police had arrived that the hit man noticed he had a broken arm. I am sure it scared the driver just as much as the man hit but certainly it seems the driver was not at fault and it was unavoidable. It is by no means a hit an run! Relax, there are still decent people out there and if this were someone you knew, I know you would not be leaving such absurd comments as impounding the assault vehicle and taking ones license. Get real.

Was he in a crosswalk? Most of the people I see crossing the street aren't in crosswalks.

yes I would, because i would make my verdict based on the facts presented. You hit someone, YOU STOP, YOU Call for help and YOU render aid - these are the hallmarks of a responsible driver "in an accident" Leaving the scene (of anything) has long been considered an action stemming from GUILT, of what? Likely negligence. Leaving the scene even if it was an "accident" makes it a CRIME. I'd be hard pressed to imagine or accept an explanation for running someone over and then leaving...

It's hard to design an "idiot proof" intersection. Build one and the next thing you know along come even bigger idiots.

I live close to that area and there really needs to be some kind redesign. It is crazy in morning and afternoons. The crosswalks needs a dedicated crosswalk cycle during these hours rather than having pedestrians cross with car traffic. Same with the 4-way stop on State and South U in A2. That place really needs a light, not just a 4-way stop. But in this case to stop crosswalk traffic so cars can get through without pedestrians jumping out in front of them when the car is already halfway thru the intersection. Its like they are waiting to see how many people get hit at these busy pedestrian intersections.

Isn't this the same story as last week ?

Sorry once the driver left the scene, it was no longer an "accident" Confiscate his assault vehicle and take his license at the very least.

You'd be great on a jury. The verdict would be in before "all rise".
