Police arrest 2nd suspect in armed robbery outside Ypsilanti High School

Two men accused of beating and robbing a man outside Ypsilanti High School in April are now in custody, police said.
A 31-year-old Ypsilanti Township man was arrested Thursday in connection with a brutal assault that left a 36-year-old man unable to move all night on the school's grounds, Sgt. Geoff Fox with the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office said.
The man could face charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm and armed robbery. He will be named upon arraignment, which will likely come before the end of the week.
The second suspect, Maynor Oliverio Lopez-Requiec, 24, had his case adjourned until July 17 when he appeared Wednesday in the Washtenaw County Trial Court. He is charged with assault with intent to murder, armed robbery and carrying a weapon with unlawful intent, according to court records.
The two men are accused of being in a group of three or four men who approached the 36-year-old Ypsilanti Township man around 10 p.m. April 23 near Ypsilanti High School, located 2095 Packard Road.
“One of the subjects was possibility carrying a bat, or some sort of other object,” Fox said.
Lopez-Requiec is accused of striking the man with the object, Fox said. The victim told police he then fell to the ground and was kicked in the face and robbed of his wallet and cash. The suspects then fled.
“He attempted to get up, but he couldn’t due to the severe head wound," Fox said about the victim. The man laid there overnight.
He was discovered in the morning by someone and taken to the hospital in critical condition from the head injuries and hypothermia, Fox said.
The victim knew some of the suspects, including Lopez-Requiec, who was arrested the next day and arraigned April 26.
Judge Archie Brown granted Lopez-Requiec, who speaks Spanish, an adjournment Wednesday due to translation difficulties. Investigators and attorneys have said the language barrier has created difficulties interviewing both Lopez-Requiec and the suspect arrested Thursday, who also speaks Spanish.
"I'm concerned if Mr. Lopez understands what's going on," Lopez-Requiec's court-appointed attorney, Erika Julien, told Brown when requesting the adjournment Wednesday. "This case is still unfolding."
She was granted a translator and time for at least two meetings in jail to speak with her client.
Both suspects are living in the country illegally and face deportation to Guatemala whether convicted or not, officials said.
Lopez-Requiec remains in the Washtenaw County Jail on a $40,000 cash or surety bond.

Well we can expect a whole lot more of this kind of stuff now with this nearly 1200 page Amnesty bill that hasn't even been read by those passing it, much less discussed and debated whether it's actually a good idea for America or not, that will allow 11 MILLION Illegals to live here legally, even those with criminals with misdemeanor charges on their record.

"These types of people"? Actually, if you read up on on the situation, communities with higher immigrant populations have lower crime rates overall (http://tinyurl.com/ntw3bb3). Also, if you read the Obama administration's suggested policy, there is no amnesty at all to those convicted of serious crimes. Any immigrant with a felony or three misdemeanors is ineligible.

Why do you people have to politicize everything? Use your sense. If someone is here illegally they are breaking the law and there has to be consequences. Deportation makes the most sense. Granting amnesty to law-breakers doesn't, and I don't care if you are a Repub. or a Demo.

Yeah, those grammarian journalists all lost their jobs because they spent too much time worrying about grammar and not enough time hustling to keep the newpaper's doors open. I'm pretty sure this business thrives most on traffic due to the volume of published content, and not on whether there were minor typos. Pretty sure that grammar does not drive traffic or revenue. Violence is a science. People should make themselves aware of how it most often happens and methods to counteract it. Street Predators will be the very skilled in employing it. It's not a battle of honor event. The vast amount of it will hit you quickly in your blind spot. The winner almost always is the one that can inflict the first or greater body trauma that shuts down the opponent(s). It's not strictly guns, knives, bats or specific weapons or martial arts ability that will save you in an attack scenario rather it's being able to extract yourself somewhat intact and alive from the situation with any method or tool handy Simpler said , once engaged you must put the hurt on them before the larger is put on you.

Actually, what you're implying is not really accurate. Nearly 1,600 of the FBI gun crime statistics for 2011 are labeled as "undefined", meaning they could be rifles. The known difference between blunt objects (496) vs. rifles (323) is a mere 173 offenses. Of the 1,600 undefined gun offenses, surely a significant portion of those are rifles, which would put it beyond blunt objects. Alas, guns are guns. They are designed to harm people. If these alleged perpetrators are in fact in the USA illegally, and are convicted, I would like to see them do their time in a Michigan prison (a lengthy amount of time, if the story above is factual) and then deported. The story reports that the victim was unable to get help until someone found him the next day. April is not a exactly a warm time of year. The victim thank god lived through the night. I would imagine he is going to need medical care for some time as well. The brutality and cruelty of this crime shook me to the core especially since I live close by this area. I live alone and no one would know I was missing right away if I were in this poor guys position. The crime is very heinous if you really think about it.
