Ypsilanti police are investigating the death of a 52-year-old woman who was found in her home by city firefighters Wednesday morning when they were notified of a possible fire at her residence.

Ypsilanti Fire Department Captain Max Anthourard said firefighters were called at 11:19 a.m. Wednesday to a home in the 700 block of North Prospect Street after the woman’s brother found her dead in her home. Anthourard said the man reported the smell of smoke in the kitchen from a burner on a stove that had been left on.

Anthourard said firefighters responded to the home and the woman was face down in her bed. The Ypsilanti Police Department was called in and is investigating her death, Anthourard said.

The burner on the stove had burned a cutting board and a few other small objects near it, but had not set the entire home on fire. Anthourard said firefighters originally were dispatched for a report of a person in cardiac arrest with carbon monoxide involved.

A carbon monoxide detector was found unplugged on the wall, he said.

The Washtenaw County Medical Examiner’s Office is going to do an autopsy to determine the cause of death, Anthourard said.

Police have not made a determination whether any criminal activity was involved in the woman’s death.
