Police: Robber cuts hole in drywall to break into apartment
A robber cut a hole in the drywall of a hallway at an Ypsilanti apartment house to get in and steal electronics, police said.
A woman told police that someone stuck an arm through the hole to unlock the door to her apartment, located in the 1100 block of Huron River Drive.
Once inside, the thief stole multiple electronic devices, according to a release from Ypsilanti police.
The woman reported the incident to police at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. No other information was immediately available about the incident.
There are no suspects at this time. Police continue to investigate.

That is pretty cleaver. The way to prevent this is to use a deadbolt that needs a key from both the outside and inside. They are to be a no--no since you could be trap if a fire breakout and in the panic you can not find the key to unlock the door. However my side door with a glass window got such a deadbolt but I don't lock it when I am inside my home, just when nobody is in the house.

nah, good idea. If a fire broke out just go through the wall. No muss no fuss.

This appears to be just down the street from where the homicide of Julia Niswender occurred (1000 block of N. Huron River Drive).

How does somebody not hear this going on? Extremely thin drywall? If this were going on in an apartment near mine, in my complex, I would probably hear it happening.

Cutting drywall is easy and can be done quietly...

I think "cut" is the key. Not "smashed". You can cut drywall with a sharp knife.

Old NYC trick. That's why it's now standard practice there to sheath the hallway walls with plywood before drywalling.
