The Color Run Ypsilanti video: A story in pink, blue, orange and yellow

By Daniel Brenner

More than 15,000 people participated in The Color Run in Ypsilanti on Saturday.

The morning dawned brisk, with a long line of traffic to get even remotely close to the starting line. Upon arrival, people huddled together for warmth in suspense for what the next five kilometers would have in store for them.

The typical electronic and popular hip hop songs wear thumping. Kids and adults, bicyclists and strollers, people with neon green hair and others with ordinary black, blond and brunette styles were all set to start.

The countdown finished and the participants were off at a leisurely pace down North River Street. Off in the distance, the runners approached the first "color station" where a cloud of powder rose into the air. It was pink. There was a barrage of sprays, pours, throws, and dumps of colored powder.

The fun wasn't over. Three color stations and a trek down Michigan Avenue later, the runners crossed the finish line and entered Riverside Park for refreshments, merchandise, and a bright, loud concert.

I should also mention the last clip of the vid was filmed by Courtney Sacco and his D800. It looks really great and had to be included.

Daniel, great job on doing something different with this video. Crane shots, fisheye, camera on the runners, editing with the music. Really well done! I hope you'll submit it to MPPA contest.

Toxic colored powders tossed in the air are dangerous to breathe for anyone, not just those with asthma. There are better ways to have an event. Who cleans up the mess left on the streets?

I believe the powder was colored cornstarch. And not sure who cleans up the leftovers but there are events like these all around the country. No doubt they have it planned to a "T". All the color stations had plastic on the ground, couldn't be too difficult to clean up. I drove part of the route today and it was spotless.

I have to mirror the other compliments Dan, as an asthmatic I wouldn't get within a mile of this event, but watching this video was just as fun as being there. Looks like everyone had a great morning in Ypsi!

Thanks Kyle. I've got asthma issues too. And it usually acts up when I'm heavily exercising or working a lot. Yesterday, I ran the full 5k and surprising had no issues. I also wear hard contacts and they were fine the whole day. Really, I should have been the furthest person from the event. I lucked out.

When I saw all that powder in the air, it made me very uneasy. I'm asthmatic, too. Most of the time, I don't have the symptoms, though, luckily!

Compliments on the video, for sure.
