Victim identified in Saturday's fatal shooting in Ypsilanti Township

By Heather Lockwood

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department has identified the victim of Saturday's fatal shooting in Ypsilanti Township as Marcus Tramale Jones.

Sheriff's deputies went to the area of Nash Avenue and Mary Catherine Street in the township's West Willow neighborhood about 2:30 a.m. Saturday after residents reported hearing gunshots.

Jones, 33, of Ypsilanti Township, was found lying in a yard in the 1300 block of Nash Avenue, according to a Sheriff's Department media summary released today.

Two other men were injured during the shooting and were transported to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital by private citizens, according to the release. The other two men, one who was born in 1979 and the other in 1981, were expected to recover from their injuries, department spokesman Derrick Jackson told AnnArbor.com Saturday.

Some neighbors reported hearing as many as 12 to 15 gunshots.

Huron Valley Ambulance arrived shortly after deputies and transported Jones to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Jones turned 33 last week and, according to Ashlei McDonald, 17, a West Willow resident who says she is the victim's cousin, was celebrating his birthday with friends over the weekend.

A neighbor, who spoke to AnnArbor.com Saturday on the condition that his name not be used, said the sound of nearby gunfire awoke him about 2:30 a.m.

“They had a party there last night,” he said. “Before the police showed up there were about 20 of them that piled out the back door.”

No further details were immediately available.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the sheriff's office confidential tip line, (734) 973-7711 or 1-800-SPEAK UP.

I would hardly consider the victims prison time(s) for drug charges as likely to be irrelevant in this ,yet another, all to familiar ypsilanti area shooting/murder scenerio. But thats for the cops to determine. Especially since the amounts of cocaine listed on his rap sheet do not appear to have been small amounts. Prayers for the family and hopes that someone may learn from this unfourtunate event.

yes, everyone has a Mother and a Father and I am sure that did have love for their Son, but when a child has problems dealing with Friends with Guns, it is a sad situation for any family when the person does died during a situation that did happen in Ypsilanti, MI. That is a good example why people should not have Guns, no one should have a gun unless they are the Police Department and they do know how to use any type of gun and they do not Kill any one unless it is a accident. They are a wonderful shot and they know how to shoot the Guns in a wonder way so NO one will get KILLED.

Tsk tsk. There an unlawful use of a vehicle conviction there as well. Only the authorities should have cars then also right? After all how many lives will be saved then? Not to mention the Earth, or dependence on foreign oil etc etc

Come on. I know that this man had a mother and a family who loved him no matter what problem he had in his life. Do you think a mom stops loving her child when he does something wrong? Have a little respect for the family of the dead man. God help them. They not only live with the loss, but with the "looking down the nose" at him as well.

It is I who must live with the guilt of"looking down my nose" at him.

@ Jackietreehorn: Why is this guy's small (and non-violent) criminal record relevant to this story? My guess is that the reporter left it out because the answer is none except to small minded folks who jump to the ridiculous "he deserved" it conclusion .

When you live in a lifestyle of drugs, guns, and incarceration what is the next thing to follow? Had the story been "graduated high school with a 3.0, attended two years of WCC, finished his degree at Eastern Mich. we probably would not have a story here.

I don't remember jumping to any conclusions. Simply empowering the readers with some additional information. Take it for what you will. Funny to jump to name-calling, though. Goodness.
