Water pipes freeze and burst, damaging apartments in Ypsilanti Township

By Cindy Heflin

Water pipes burst overnight Wednesday in an apartment building in the 1200 block of Holmes Road in Ypsilanti Township, damaging four apartments and displacing at least four residents.

The heat had been turned off in two vacant apartments, said Lt. Dave Crescio of the Ypsilanti Township Fire Department. Water pipes between the vacant apartments and two occupied apartments froze and burst as a result, he said.

Residents called 911 about 1 a.m. after they were unable to reach apartment maintenance personnel, Crescio said. Firefighters shut off the water, and the Washtenaw County Chapter of the American Red Cross provided lodging to four residents.

Crescio said about a half to an inch of water was on the floor of the kitchen area of one apartment when the department responded.
