Woman reports men, one toting rifle, robbed her as she got out of car
Two men, one armed with a rifle, stole a woman’s cellphone, wallet and keys early Friday morning in Ypsilanti, police said.
The victim, a 19-year-old Ypsilanti resident, was getting out of her vehicle in the 700 block of Green Road about 2:30 a.m. Friday when two men approached her, police said in a press release. The woman said one of the men was carrying what she described as a hunting-type rifle.
She reported the men went through her pockets and took her wallet, cellphone and keys. She said the men who robbed her were in their early 20s. Both had bald heads and dark complexions.
Ypsilanti police who went to investigate stopped a suspicious vehicle seen leaving the area. They questioned the suspects and identified them but did not arrest them.
Lt. Paul DeRitter said the men were stopped because police thought it was suspicious they were in the area so soon after the incident. The woman was asked to identify the men as suspects, but she said she did not recognize them.
The men are not currently suspects in the case, DeRitter said.
Police continue to investigate. Anyone with information in the case is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Tom Eberts at 734-482-9878 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAKUP (773-2587).

It simply amazes me to read day in and day out, that it appears nothing bad happens in Ann Arbor! The street a crime may have happened on, whether on the border of Ann Arbor and Ypsi. or not, it's always Ypsilanti. Crime happens everywhere, including Ann Arbor. Just sayin...

I am still trying to figure out what a "toting rifle" is and how it was involved. :)

Are you just now becoming aware of the "new style of casual journalism" on this site? ;-) Just sit back awhile, you'll find plenty more examples.

Tru2Blu76, Could you enlighten us on your magic forcefield that keeps you safe at all times no matter the situation, could it be special super powers or perhaps just an uncanny spidy sense that allows you to be an expert and comment on what the victims of crime should have/could have done?

Macabre Sunset: you say my phrasing sounded to you I was trying to criticize the victim in this incident. That's your impression and I regret it is. Just try suggesting any means of improving the chance of countering similar threats - you'll also appear to be criticizing the victim in the example. Notice that your conclusion about time of the incident is yours alone - I said nothing about that in my post. I've requested that A2.com publish such public safety information - that got nowhere. So the alternative is to write a column myself - but honesty compels me to not do so because I'm not certified as an expert in the area of self defense. There are such experts in that area: that's the only positive statement I made and I suggest people might be interested in finding such advice / training / methods or strategies - according to their interest and need. Notice by your own logic: I didn't even mention the victim except to say she has my sympathy. A true statement because: the victim was obviously caught off guard and may not have knowledge of personal security or self defense tactics. Notice also that A2.com's policy has been enforced ONLY in cases where there's a direct criticism of a victim. My post was not removed - therefore it's reasonable to conclude that my post is in compliance after having remained for about 12 hours. "In a civilized society, we don't let criminals ply their trade at any hour." --- You say that even when the evidence clearly contradicts you. This incident did happen - criminals "plied their trade" rather boldly and so far haven't been caught. You suggest that the problem is solved - but it keeps coming up. Whatever: whether you think you're safe and prepared to defend yourself isn't my concern. Be happy that no one is going to contradict you unless you become a helpless victim at some point in your lifetime. The rest of us have the right to know.

It sounded like, in a rather convoluted manner, you were trying to state that she shouldn't have been awake at 2:30 in the morning. In a civilized society, we don't let criminals ply their trade at any hour.

sheepyd: I explicitly wrote that you should find your own answers - and sincerely hope you succeed. What part of that proposal don't you understand??

"The victim, a 19-year-old [ female ] Ypsilanti resident, was getting out of her vehicle in the 700 block of Green Road about 2:30 a.m. Friday when two men approached her..." The above is the required "who-what-when-and-where" part of any news article. I conclude that it's up to us to ask questions, like: What could be done in this situation to avoid / counter those who were armed and committing such a robbery? And of course, asking a question like that implies the need to find some solid answers. Have I got that right? It happens that, I long ago, started seeking such solid answers. Turns out - I'm happy to report - there ARE ways to avoid being victimized as this unfortunate young woman was. But rather than set myself up as a target for those who might disagree: I'll leave it to everyone to find their own answers. I sincerely hope everyone succeeds. Other than that, all I can say as that my sympathy goes out to this young lady. It must have been a fearful few minutes for her.

"Both had bald heads and dark complexions." Does that mean "tanned" or how about "black?" Maybe "Hispanic" or "latino?" Dark complexion is woefully PC...and a terrible descriptor. I hope that's a direct quote from the police or the victim and not "journalistic license."

Then the police should have known better...poor information like this has almost no chance of helping to catch a suspect.
