The Ypsilanti Jaycees are planning a cash mob on Friday at The Rocket in downtown Ypsilanti.

Angela Cesere | AnnArbor.com

The Ypsilanti Jaycees are staging a cash mob at two stores in the hope of promoting and supporting businesses in the area, the Ypsilanti Courier reported.

A cash mob is an organized shopping event where a group of people shop at a specific store all at once.

Jaycees member and cash mob organizer Rose Peruski told the Courier she was inspired by similar cash mobs that had taken place in Cleveland.

The group will "mob" The Rocket, 122 W. Michigan Ave., Friday at 6 p.m. and at 7 p.m., participants will move to Sticks, 39 E. Cross St., in Depot Town.

How about a cash mob at an art fair. Buying art from one of the most in need of sales, artists!!

While the Jaycees mob each other I think I will try out the new Cafe just down the street Bona Sera Cafe. I hear good things about the food they serve.

Just take a look at the business next door to the Rocket and you'll see where a lot of "disposable" income goes...the medical marijuana dispensary

OK - I get and am smiling - I don't imbibe myself so my apologies to Mr Joad for suspecting a pot shot at Ypsi!

The Rocket sells candy. What happens when you smoke dope? Just a thought if you still don't get it.

I don't get it - what's the point? Don't go to ypsi? Judge the Rocket because there is a legal business next to it that you don't like? What's your point?

I had to think about that one for a minute. Good post.

FROM THE ORGANIZER--the Cash Mob WILL be an all day event. You can stop by The Rocket anytime during business hours to mob. The "after mob" is at Stick's starting at 7pm. You can visit the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/cashmobypsi, or follow us on Twitter @CashMobYpsi. Thank You!

I thought a cash mob was supposed to be an all-day event with the idea that customers are streaming in throughout the day and registers are ringing continuously.

It is all day. I tried to put a post up about that, but I think AnnArbor.com took it down. I know because I'm organizing it!

A little info in the article describing these businesses would have been helpful.

I don't think the Jaycees know what a cash mob is. Its a pre-planned "spontaneous" event where a lot of people show up at once and buy things from a failing business. Neither the Rocket nor Sticks are failing. The mob should pick a business that is on the verge of going out of business.

A bar??? Seriously? Of all the places that could use a shot in the arm, a bar? Think I'll stay home.

@jns, I believe this is on Friday, the last "business" day of the recogized typical five day Monday through Friday work week.

if you must "after mob" with a drink, look at the history (the REAL history) of how the owners of these establishments treat their employees. I will never spend a penny at a Bill French owned est. again. Sidetrack, thre's your choice! I know too many people who got burned by Mr. French.

To those who find drinking during the middle of the week a bad career move, Third Coast? I'll stay home too.

As the organizer, I can tell you that we did not intend to Cash Mob a bar. We are mobbing The Rocket. Later on, we will be "after mobbing" at Stick's so we can gather to share a drink and share a story.

Will this actually help the businesses stay open... or will it get publicity for a group that most people under 35 have never heard of?

jns131

Tue, Sep 18, 2012 : 10:37 p.m.

What I find interesting is the fact that the Rocket is based on pre 60's stuff. Unless you are into this kind of stuff being under 35, this would go for more of the over the hill gang. But then I have heard of the college students getting into it. So to answer your question? I have no idea.

I'm a little confused as to the...um.....methodology of this. Is the idea that organizing people to shop at 1 or 2 stores in an area will increase the chance that they'll also stop in at other neighboring shops and spend money too? Does that actually work?

Ross

I think the idea is to directly support the business targeted. They get a one day infusion of thousands of dollars. Spillover into neighboring businesses is a side-benefit.

Good question - I can think of many Ypsi retailers who would appreciate this sort of help
