Car strikes Ypsilanti man on Huron River Drive, causing serious injuries

By Kyle Feldscher

An 18-year-old Ypsilanti man was seriously injured Wednesday when he was struck by a westbound vehicle at the intersection of Huron River Drive and Schooner Cove Boulevard in Ypsilanti Township

The pedestrian was standing on the north side of Huron River Drive on the curb when he began walking into the intersection, according to Washtenaw County sheriff’s department spokesperson Derrick Jackson. A vehicle being driven by an 18-year-old Ypsilanti woman then struck him, according to Jackson.

The accident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Jackson said early indications showed the man looked to his right but never looked to his left before entering the roadway. The pedestrian then walked directly in front of the car, Jackson said.

The pedestrian suffered injuries to his head, skull and back, but he was alert and talking, Jackson said. The full extent of his injuries was unclear as of Thursday morning.

I am waiting for an update on this story from Derrick Jackson right now. He said the last he heard, the pedestrian was recovering well, but he will get back to me with any new details.

Just a comment: a crosswalk may be a solution here, but pedestrians still have to look both ways. A car can't stop on a dime, one has to allow for reaction time and braking distance.

I live in that area and yes, there needs to be a crosswalk! Very dangerous curves and the speed makes it a difficult road to cross.

It looks like Helmet laws just shouldn't be for motorcycles anymore. If he wore a helmet it would have prevented the head injuries! Come on Ann Arbor City Council, be the first in the helmet to require walkers to wear helmets.

Given the amount of pedestrian traffic between Schooner Cove and the subdivision across the street, perhaps a crosswalk may be in order?

Actually, there really aren't a lot of people trying to go between the apartments and the subdivision. Usually they are just walking down Huron River Drive. Also, as stated before: I certainly hope that if they do decide to put a crosswalk, they would also put a light for pedestrians to activate. There is a crosswalk about a quarter or half mile west of there near Lakecrest Dr but I think it only exists because of the sidewalks in the neighborhood and the bike/walking path on the other side of Huron River Dr, both of which end well before the apartments. There is no light at that cross walk and the road is so wide there with so many driveways that it is difficult to pay attention to people that may be coming to or from that path.

As if people would stop for that.

Any idea what time of day this occurred? I've also seen lots of folks crossing HR Dr. in that spot. Maybe a crosswalk there would be a good thing.

Happened around 5:30 pm. I was listening on the scanner. Officer said car was traveling 50 mph and didn't brake before hitting pedestrian. Are the sides of the road clear of trees and bushes where this happened? Just curious.

I'm thinking it happened around or 6pm, judging by when I heard the sirens. I drove by at about 6:45 and according to a friend, the road was still closed after 7pm. I certainly hope that if they do decide to put a crosswalk, they would also put a light for pedestrians to activate. People cross the road here all the time without watching carefully enough. There's a lot of traffic on Huron River Drive at this time and the speed limit is 45mph and the incident occurred on a curve. There are no sidewalks or cross walks here. Thankfully the young man lived. Hopefully this encourages other pedestrians in this area to be a little more cautious. I cannot tell you how many times I have encountered pedestrians in this area, especially at night wearing dark clothing and walking in the middle of the street.

Actually it was at Huron River Drive and Spinnaker Way, not Schooner Cove Blvd, although it was in front of the Schooner Cove apartments. The road was closed right at Spinnaker Way, one of the entrances to the apartments.

Information from the county sheriff's department and the immediate report on the police scanner yesterday indicated the accident happened at Schooner Cove Boulevard.
