Ypsilanti police arrest 2 men with loaded handguns near 14A-2 District Court
Two Detroit men, one of whom led officers on a short chase, were arrested with loaded handguns Monday morning in Ypsilanti outside of the 14A-2 District Court.
Lt. Craig Annas saw the two men in the parking lot at 415 W. Michigan Ave. next to their motorcycles about 11:15 a.m., Ypsilanti police said in a statement. Annas saw a 24-year-old man pull a handgun from the compartment of one motorcycle and place it in the waistband of his pants. Annas then alerted patrol officers, who went to approach the men.
When the 24-year-old saw the officers, he took off on foot, throwing the weapon down on the ground. Police eventually caught and arrested him. The loaded .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun was recovered.
The second man, a 22-year-old from Detroit, attempted to leave the area on foot walking toward the back of the nearby police department building, but officers confronted him and arrested him. They found a loaded 9-mm semi-automatic handgun in his waistband.
The men were taken to the police department for processing and questioning before being transported to the Washtenaw County Jail, where they are currently waiting to be arraigned. They’re expected to face charges of carrying a concealed weapon.

The crime is CCW (carrying a concealed weapon): which implies "carrying WITHOUT a license." If either had a CPL (concealed pistol license), then the crime would most likely have been a misdemeanor - carrying within a "pistol free zone." Good bust - shows that the officer knew the probabilities as well as the "legal details" when encountering such behavior. The attempt to flee tends to confirm that the subjects KNEW they were acting illegally. MCL 750.226 Firearm or dangerous weapon; carrying with unlawful intent. (unlicensed) A person who violates this section is guilty of a felony, punishable by imprisonment for not more than 5 years, or by a fine of not more than $2,500.00. Sock it to 'em!!

These guys were planning something very bad. The first thing the detectives should try to find who they were planning to shoot (allegedly of course) . Were they after somebody who was going to testify against one of their friends perhaps? Were they just out for revenge against somebody who was simply going to appear in court as a defendant? Were they possibly going after a Court Officer or Judge?? GREAT JOB by the Ypsilanti Police in catching these guys before they started shooting, but the real work begins now. A simple concealed weapon charge isn't adequate. They need to look for evidence of a conspiracy to commit murder or something. Only that will help keep these guys locked up for a long time, like they seem to deserve.

Are YOU serious? I've seen metal detectors and baggage xray devices at the entrances to several courts over the recent years. I can't believe this court doesn't have that kind of protection. If they don't, I think it's a pretty good guess that they'll be getting it very soon!

These two sound real smooth. Park in a parking lot near the courthouse and the headquarters building of the Ypsi Police Department and think nobody is going to notice one of them pulling a gun out in broad daylight. Of course the story did say these dudes were from Detroit so maybe they thought they could get away with it in a hick town like Ypsilanti. Way to go Lt. Annas and the other officers of YPD.

I can understand a visitor to court forgetting to leave her cellphone in the car, but WHY would anyone want to take the Big Boomer (.45 cal) into a courtroom? And he didn't just forget to remove it; he was observed removing the semi from a storage compartment and stashing it on his person. Ahhh, these Harley types. First they didna want ta be required to wear helmets, now they want to carry heat into a courtroom. Do that enuf times and the field of candidates running for judge will dwindle. Anyone want to be judge? Not.

Thanks for the insightful, thought provoking, carefully considered comment that makes this such a great place for constructive dialogue that helps this City move forward with input from its citizens. FYI: the fountain (which I hate) is outside the 15th District Court in Ann Arbor, not the 14A-2 Court in Ypsilanti.
