Ypsilanti, Willow Run leaders to discuss consolidation in public forums

By Katrease Stafford

Two more public forums will be held on the proposed consolidation of the Ypsilanti and Willow Run school districts this month.

The Ypsilanti and Willow Run boards of education met Aug. 8 at Welch Hall on Eastern Michigan University's campus to discuss a ballot proposal to consolidate the districts.

Ypsilanti and Willow Run school boards approved placing the question of merging the districts on the Nov. 6 general election ballot at a joint meeting on Aug. 8.

The districts recently launched a mass-marketing campaign to ensure voters understand the impact of consolidation.

Leaders and community members met Oct. 10 at the Christ Temple Baptist Church to discuss the possible merger.

The other two meetings will be held on the following dates:

  • 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at Community Church of God, 565 Jefferson St., Ypsilanti Township
  • 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the Ypsilanti District Library, 5577 Whittaker Road, Ypsilanti Township

The Minister’s Alliance of Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor & Vicinity pledged its support of the unification effort via letter in July. The districts scheduled pulpit visits between October and November. One is planned for 11:15 a.m., Oct. 14 at the Messias Temple at 200 Harriet St.

There really isn't much to discuss. There is little information as to what a consolidation would actually look like, where the savings would come from, how the debt would be structured, which administrators/teachers would stay or go, which buildings would be kept open or closed, where students would attend school, the role of WISD, or how teacher employment will be handled. I suspect that this withholding of information is intentional.
