Ypsilanti woman reports being assaulted by stranger

By Lee Higgins

A man walked up behind an Ypsilanti woman Sunday night on West Cross Street and put his hand over her mouth, telling her not to say anything, but she scared him away when she screamed, an Ypsilanti police media summary said.

The 20-year-old victim was not injured in the assault at 8:55 p.m., the summary said.

According to the summary, she was approached in the 900 block of West Cross Street as she was taking items out of her car in a parking lot outside her apartment. The victim initially complied with the man's order to keep quiet, but screamed when he took his hand off her mouth for a moment, the summary said.

Police said the man was described as 5 feet, 5 inches tall, in his early 40s, with a large build and was seen wearing a light brown knit winter cap.

Anyone with information can call Ypsilanti police at (734) 483-9510.

Pretty cool. I guess my comment had to be removed because it wasn't PC enough. You lib marginalizers are part of the reason why this country is being destroyed! You can run your newspapers and various other so-called news outlets and do endless amounts of coverage on crap that means nothing, but when it comes to the off-the-chart black-on-white crime going on you throw your hands up and holler "RACISM" if someone speaks-out about it! WHAT PHONIES!!!!!!!!!! WHAT ABSOLUTE PHONIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In my first comment, I had originally asked if it was politically incorrect to report the race of the accused. Then I decided that ASKING that question might be construed as politically incorrect, so I rephrased it. Now I see I was right. I got the same EMU alert, as I work on campus. I just hadn't seen it yet. Now that I have, I have to say that annarbor.com is doing its readers a disservice by omitting that information. And I am always glad when someone who hates Ypsi moves away. It's a win-win. :D

It would really help to know the man's race.

@lamusica and morninggirl in my opinion these type of incidents increase this time of year due to the influx of college students moving into the area.

Sigh. I'm glad she's OK and she got away. I agree with you MorningGirl, I really like Ypsi. I moved here about a year and a half ago and I love it here. It's just sad that these kinds of things keep happening more and more. It seems like there have been a lot more stranger assaults/attempted assaults lately...

There have also been several times in past stories that a reporter states he got the information straight from an EMU alert, yet the race is constantly left out in the story presented on aa.com yet it's clearly stated in the alert the reporter is referencing. Annarbor.com seems to be afraid to offend a certain race and leave it out of the description when it is clearly available and should be shared with the public.

@cindy you stated about an hour ago, so i'm assuming approximately at 1130 am, that no further info was available. I got an emu alert at 11 am (which i'm sure your newspaper got as well) stating the full description of the man.

Ok, thanks. It occurred to me later that maybe she only saw him from the back as he ran away. I hope he's caught. Ypsi is such a great place, but there are not enough police officers to go around.

Was the man white, black, Asian, Hispanic? What was the color and length of his hair? Did he have facial hair? Was he wearing a jacket? A more detailed description might results in more leads.
