Brushes with fame: Camp Al-Gon-Quian's writing campaign

By Jan Hack

Al-Gon-Aquian, or AGQ, the Y’s residential camp on Burt Lake, has a tradition of creative summer programs. In 2008, counselors got together to establish the camp’s first library, as part of its fine arts program. AGQ campers read, write stories, play music and produce the camp newspaper. This summer, AGQ counselors Bennett Stein and David Shapiro had an ambitious plan: get local and national celebrities to visit AGQ and read to kids during story hour. Campers gathered daily in the camp library to select a “person of the day” to whom they each composed a personal, handwritten letter. President Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Granholm, and Ellen DeGeneres were just a few of the celebrities invited to visit Al-Gon-Quian. Truth be told, not many celebrities wrote back. However, Stephen King’s publicist took time to send a handwritten note to the kids. Best of all, a large envelope arrived with this headshot and handwritten note from James Earl Jones himself! THANK YOU, MR. JONES!
