Animal first-aid kits included after Triad Group expands product recall

In the past, I've talked about the importance of having a first-aid kit on hand for pets.

Many of the same products that would be included in a pet first aid kit are not unlike that of a kit designed for a human — and a recall issued by a Wisconsin medical supply company that involves first aid and medical supplies has been extended to include basic first aid supplies marketed for use with pets.

The recall, issued by Creative Pet Products and MAI/Genesis (Veterinary Concepts) is part of Triad Group, which makes medical supplies for hospitals, medical clinics, households.

Triad Group has been behind three product recalls in recent months, including all of their sterile and nonsterile alcohol wipes and swabs.

Alleged contamination issues in human pharmaceutical products led to a shut down of Triad's plant in Hartland, Wis. by the Food and Drug Administration.

Thousands of animal care kits marketed for dogs, cats and horses are included in the recall because alcohol prep pads and sterile lubricant jelly could be contaminated with Bacillus cereus bacteria.

The kits were distributed across the globe, including to areas where they might be put into use to care for military working dogs.

Iodine pads are part of the first two recalls, and are suspected to be contaminated with a bacteria that is difficult to treat: Elizabethkingia meningoseptica.

A press release issued in January by the FDA noted a voluntary recall of all lots of alcohol prep pads, alcohol swabs and alcohol swabsticks due to potential microbial contamination.

Manufacturers of the first-aid kits for humans and animals have told consumers to immediately dispose of the alcohol and iodine pads that were part of Triad recalls.
