Baby squirrel raised by mother cat, acts like a kitten

WLBT-TV in Mississippi has a heartwarming story about a mother cat, Emmy, who adopted a baby squirrel after he fell out his nest.

Just before Emmy's owner gave her up, a baby squirrel fell out of a nest and landed in the yard. Not being able to climb a tree and put it back, the lady did the next best thing.

"And she put the squirrel in the box with the kittens and she just immediately accepted it and adopted it, started feeding it , has raised it just like hers," said Jim Watkins.

Even more amazing is the fact that Rocky seems to think he is a kitten — and even purrs. Check out Rocky in action in the video below.

I love this story; it is so sweet! Other stations have been running their versions of the story of the baby squirrel, but yours is, by far, the best. I told my girlfriend in Idaho about it & spent half an hour searching the net to find your story to send her. It's one of those stories that just makes me feel good inside. I have a little black cat called Shadow who sits next to me when I'm on the computer & she watched the story with me. I think she liked it, too. Thank you so much for running such a heart warming story. Sincerely, Kathie & Shadow, Portland,Oregon

Kind-hearted gesture, but not the way to go! The animal should have been taken to a licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility. It is illegal for people to keep, raise, or repair wild animals without a state permit (and federal permit for migratory birds). The vocalization the squirrel is making is not purring - that is a sound young squirrels make. Wild animals deserve to be in the wild. Having a squirrel as a pet is not the way to go. http://nwrawildlife.org/page.asp?ID=110 When you find an injured or orphaned wild animal, go here: http://www.mswildliferehab.org/MWRrehabbers.htm

It's cute until the squirrels become weaponized.
