Natural Balance announces voluntary recall on dog food over possibility of salmonella

By Lorrie Shaw

In 2007, a pet food recall was issued after the FDA discovered that vegetable proteins imported from China that were used to produce pet foods were contaminated with melamine. Sadly, some animals were sickened, and even died. After this recall, it's fair to say that many of us had become even more aware of how the pet food industry is regulated and how lapses are corrected, which is a great thing. Knowledge is power, as the saying goes.

The FDA posted a new announcement for a voluntary pet food recall on June 18 - relating to Natural Balance Pet Foods, Inc. More specifically, the company discovered that there was the possibility of salmonella contamination in 5- and 28-pound bags of their Sweet Potato and Chicken Dry Dog Food. Consumers who have purchased that formula need to look for a "best by" date of June 17, 2011.

Salmonella, also referred to as salmonellosis, causes digestive problems, and dogs will typically present with fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and weakness. Other symptoms can occur.

Salmonella is a zoonotic disease, meaning that it can be passed to humans as well, so care needs to be taken. Hand washing is a must - even when handling dry pet food that may be contaminated with the bacteria.
