What is xylitol and is it harmful to pets?

Those with counter surfing dogs and thieving pooches who snoop through your purse in search of goodies take note: There is a substance used in many products that might seem benign but could cause serious illness in your companion animal, or even death.

Xylitol is a popular sugar substitute found in sugarless gum, sweets and even toothpaste. But what is helpful for us humans isn't always so for pets.
