I frequently write about the bond that humans and animals share — and how that so many times, as much as our society would like to say that we are an inclusive lot, our culture doesn't always allow a pet-friendly lifestyle.

The sad face that dog owners see when they go out after being gone away at work all day leaves one feeling guilty.

Sure, there are dog parks and play dates with other dogs, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a person who shares life with a dog that wouldn't love to attend an event that appeals to both species.

The latter can be a challenge, but an event taking place Thursday, Aug. 18 here in Ann Arbor will suit both two and four-legged family members.

"Yappy Hour" — a dog-friendly event presented by Humane Society of Huron Valley, Roger Monk's and annarbor's 107one FM —  celebrates the relationship between human and pet, giving dog people an opportunity to spend time with each other while their respective pooches get to spend time with their people, new people and other canines.

“This is our second event of the summer,” said Deb Kern, HSHV marketing director.

“We had a wonderful time back in May with around 125 dogs attending. We’ve expanding the seating and made some adjustments so that even more people can come with their dog and enjoy the food and drink specials that Roger Monk's has to offer.”

With a great forecast expected, a suggested donation of just $5 per dog and great food and drink specials, Yappy Hour looks like an affordable local event that will do everyone involved good. Whether you're on the deck or under the tent, it will be a fun, inviting atmosphere for both humans and dogs. Plus, all proceeds benefit homeless pets in the community.

Sponsored by Westarbor Animal Hospital, Karnik Pet Lodge, Spoil Me Pet Accessories and Wags to Wiskers, the event takes place at Roger Monk's, an establishment known for their hospitality.

Morning host from ann arbor's 107one FM, Martin Bandyke, will be on hand, as well as folks from HSHV. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn more about the nonprofit as well as programs that they can participate in to help homeless companion animals.

Adoptable dogs from HSHV will also be there partaking in the festivities, which will be held from 4-7 p.m. RSVPs are not required.

Bring a leash, and come hungry for the pre-weekend event. Roger Monk's is located at 5400 Plymouth Road in Ann Arbor.
