Zingerman's Delicatessan. This restaurant has put Ann Arbor on the map, receiving various food and wine awards, including being named one of the top 25 food markets in the world by Food and Wine magazine in 2004. Zingerman's is known for its high quality ingredients and fine cheese and olive oil, as well as its true specialty, deli sandwiches, made with premium ingredients. Dozens of sandwiches, piled high and made with corned beef, pork, turkey, beef, pastrami and vegetarian ingredients and served on Zingerman's freshly made bread, have drawn locals to this place since 1982 and have made it a required stop for tourists. Housed in a historic building near the Farmer's market, you wander through an enticing area, smelling the aroma of fresh-baked bread while witnessing an ample display of exotic cheese and olive oil, before placing your order at the counter. Portions are mammoth, even for the half sandwiches. Jewish deli standards, like Matzoh Ball soup, are on the menu, as well as salads and a large selection of decadent pastries. Service is a hallmark of Zingerman's, and the servers here are always extremely friendly, happy to help you navigate the menu. This place is often crowded during peak meal times.
