Big George's opens early for Black Friday electronics sales in Ann Arbor

By Sarah Rigg

Though the fourth quarter isn't necessarily the "make or break" time of year for Big George's Appliance Mart in Ann Arbor, pressure from national retailers that are extending hours the day after Thanksgiving means that Big George’s will also offer extended hours on Nov. 27.

Normally open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, Big George's will open an hour early, at 9 a.m. on "Black Friday."

In a recent interview, Mark Bishar, the vice president of marketing for Big George's, said that in the last few years, the pattern of sales has changed.

He said the issue of the fourth quarter impact on revenue has differed decade by decade.

"In the 1980s and '90s, absolutely, the fourth quarter was everything," Bishar said.

However, in the last few years, Bishar said, the second and third quarter are typically the best quarters for Big George's. He said by the second or third quarter, people have recovered from big holiday bills and have the money to invest in home improvement projects.

While the fourth quarter isn't "everything" anymore, Bishar said he still expects holiday shopping to bring in some big revenue.

"We are poised to sell a lot of electronics," he said.

A list of holiday shopping hours for Washtenaw County, updated with “Black Friday” hours, can be found here.

Thanks for writing this article! We recently purchased a very nice Washer and Dryer from Big Georges and they gave us a fabulous deal. They were very competitive in their pricing and the person that we worked with was very informative. I price shopped other stores and ended up receiving the best price and service from a LOCAL business.

I was surprised to see they are offering any sale at all; Big George's is rarely price competitive in my experience. I like the idea of supporting a local business, but have a hard time paying a premium over other retailers in town (or online retailers) just to do so.

To Greg...it does not have to be news worthy to be here. Information like this is important to consumers and I appreciate it alot. I like to support LOCAL businesses and if I decide to get anything electronic etc. I will support Big George's and not best Buy! Thank you to the writer.

Is this really news worthy or just advertising for Big George's?
