Do we really need to worry about what to wear while shopping on Black Friday?

By Paula Gardner

I'm sitting on my couch, scouring the Internet for yet more info on Black Friday and trying to come to grips with getting up early - or not going to bed at all - so that I have the full shopping experience tomorrow.

And then one article hit me. "What to wear on Black Friday" reminded me that the day is about more than bargains.

It's also about people seeing me get bargains. And noticing, perhaps, if I choose not to shower, put on makeup or even wear something besides a baggy men's sweatshirt.

I recently spoke with some Black Friday shopping fanatics in Ann Arbor, and their tips included one of my shopping favorites: Don't wear a coat.

But then, after realizing that being at a store opening by 5 a.m. means getting in line around 4 a.m. - and showering and putting on makeup would have to happen somewhere around 3 a.m. - I had to ask: Do you care about how you look when you go out that early?

Hardly, two of them answered. "My clothes don't even match," said one. "I'm lucky if I wash my face," said the other. "You can put on a hat," said the first one.

And the third admitted to showering, dressing nicely, and putting on makeup.

It may be a personal taste issue. If you're parking in the dark, standing in line with strangers and aiming to get back to bed by 8 a.m., you might squeak by without a lot of grooming. Or so I'm telling myself.
