Have you ever had Chicago Style popcorn? Have you stood in line on the blustery streets of Chicago to get a sack of the fresh hand flavored sweet and salty snack that many Chicagoans swear by? Have you ever wished you didn’t have to go to Chicago to get it? Well guess what, it’s come to Ann Arbor.

Enter the newest little sweet shoppe in town, Gji’s.

Gji’s Sweet Shoppe is a family owned candy and popcorn shop based outside of Chicago. Gji (pronounced like “gee”) refers to the nickname of owner Sherry Kimble. Her sister in law has decided to branch out and bring this specialty store to Ann Arbor at 3368 Washtenaw Ave.

The inviting shop, which opened just in time for Halloween, is sure to draw in plenty of holiday shoppers looking for nostalgic candy items, hand-flavored popcorn tins, or just a sweet pick-me-up in the middle of a busy day. Sweedish fish, lollipops, gummy bears, chocolates, ice cream, whichever is your sweet tooth vice, you can find it at Gji’s.

My first trip to Gji’s was on a bike ride with my kids on a warm November weekend. They and I were both delighted to see the distinctive selection of candies, and to sample their popcorns and ice creams. The counter service was friendly and helpful. Even in dealing with a rather severe peanut allergy, the staff was able to get specific information to me about ingredients and processing on many of their yummy stocked items.

The staff is very welcoming; they have plenty of balloons that they readily offer to kids who enter the shop. Franchise operator Pam Kimble plans to model this location after the Illinois site, with a kid bench and cartoons-only TV near the entrance where kids can just hang out and enjoy the sweetness of childhood.
