twitpic: It's just frozen water, right? Michigan water polo team tests the snow
Check out one of the two twitpics today from the Michigan water polo team.
I interact with a lot of student-athletes each year in the media relations office at the University of Michigan, especially in the sports that I handle directly (football and women's gymnastics). I've written a number of features on coaches, athletes and support staff but the toughest article of my career was on Maureen Moody and her father, Kevin.

Maureen is now a senior on the University of Michigan women's gymnastics team and this is the first season that she won't share with her dad, Kevin. Her father was diagnosed with terminal cancer around Thanksgiving in 2008 and he vowed to fight as hard as he could to be in the stands for every one of her gymnastics meets in 2009. He only missed two meets (one to see his son pitch a no-hitter for the Michigan State Spartans) and remained strong for his family despite a difficult illness.

National Signing Day is over, which means college football is in the rear-view mirror until spring practice.
Brian Cook at mgoblog.com gets an early jump at analyzing the spring's position battles for the Michigan football team. Biggest question that must be answered for the Wolverines?

More after the jump…Almost two months have passed since Ben Cronin decided he was done with college basketball for at least the rest of this season.
He played minimal minutes for the Michigan basketball team against Coppin State, lumbering up and down the floor, clearly in pain, rehabilitation from his off-season hip surgery obviously not taking hold.

It's only February, but March Madness is already in full swing.
The NCAA is looking at expanding the NCAA tournament field from 64 teams to as many as 96. AnnArbor.com's Mike Rothstein gauges the reactions of Big Ten coaches to the expansion possibilities.
Any expansion will affect future tournaments, not the one around the corner.
For news on next month, we'll turn to Andy Glockner of SI.com, who argues that while the Big Ten and Big East may be top-heavy this year, there's one conference deeper than the rest, and it's poised to have a major impact on the NCAA tournament selection committee.
Another conference to keep an eye on: The Mountain West, which has three teams ranked in the top 25 for the first time ever. Jay Drew of the Salt Lake Tribune has more on the MWC.

After scoring 674 points and grabbing 678 rebounds, Wade was drafted by the New York Knicks in 1986 and spent 14 years overseas in Belgium playing basketball.
Now living in Florida, Wade is passing on his knowledge to the next generation of basketball players.

It doesn't matter whether injured guard Kalin Lucas plays Tuesday night for the Michigan State basketball team - the Spartans need a victory against Purdue, Draymond Green said.
“We are going to put emphasis on this game that it’s a must-win game for us,” Draymond Green said. “It is a big game for us. Purdue, they’re hot right now, they’re a tough team. They want to take a win from us.”
Purdue (19-3, 7-3), on a five-game winning streak, visits the Breslin Center today for a 9 p.m. game (ESPN) against the Big Ten-leading Spartans (19-5, 9-2).

The school says in a statement that the 6-foot-3 sophomore will not travel with the team when the Eagles play Mid-American Conference rival Buffalo on Wednesday.
Dailey is playing in his first season for Eastern Michigan after transferring from Sheridan (Wyo.) Community College. He's played in all 22 games this season and started in 14, averaging 3.9 points and 2.0 rebounds.
The calendar indicates that the Michigan hockey team is skating on borrowed time.
But with his team playing its best hockey of the season, Michigan coach Red Berenson is confident the Wolverines can secure a top spot in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament.
Yet, as favorably as the schedule sets up for Michigan, which will play four of its remaining seven regular-season games at Yost Ice Arena, both Berenson and his players realize they have to make the most of their opportunity.
Starting tonight.

From the article:
The team's charter flight from Miami touched down about 3 p.m., and players, coaches and other personnel began pulling away from the general aviation terminal in their own vehicles. But it was extremely slow going, as the motorcade inched through thick crowds that had began lining the route before 10 a.m. By the time the plane landed, the crowd stretched back 1-1/2 miles. Driving alone, head coach Sean Payton hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy out of the sunroof of his Mercedes-Benz, eliciting screams.More after the jump…
OTTAWA LAKE -- Colton Judge scored 16 of his game-high 33 points in the fourth quarter as the Whitmore Lake boys basketball team pulled away from Ottawa Lake Whiteford for a 99-88 win Monday night.
"He just kind of took over," Whitmore Lake coach Dave Arnold said, noting Judge hit back-to-back 3-point baskets on two different sequences to help the Trojans extend the narrow one-point lead (69-68) they held after three quarters.

The NCAA is considering drastically altering the current 65-team bracket, looking at expansion to 96 teams. It has led to discussion and debate and coaches and administrators taking various sides on what will be a hotly-discussed issue throughout the rest of the season and potentially into next year.

Nick Baumgartner’s dad paced back and forth through the family’s basement, too nervous to come upstairs, where his son was packing to leave for Aspen, Colo.
Baumgartner, a snowboarder sponsored by Ann Arbor’s Red Belly Boardshop, was headed to the 2010 X Games, but he and his family waited for an important phone call.
