2009 All-Washtenaw County Boys Cross Country Team

Boys cross country is the fifth in AnnArbor.com's series of 10 All-Washtenaw County teams from the fall sports season.

DREAM TEAM
Zach Carpenter (sr.), Whitmore Lake: The senior capped a four-year All-State high school career with a fifth-place finish in the Division 3 state championship race in 16:13.9. He broke the 16-minute mark while finishing fourth in the Division 3 race at the Portage Invitational (15:57) and he finished in fifth-place or better in every event he entered this season.

Nathan Karr (sr.), Pioneer: Was individual medalist in six of nine events Pioneer entered, winning two Southeastern Conference jamborees, the league’s championship race, large invitationals hosted by Portage and Holly, and a Division 1 regional. Earned his second All-State medal by finishing 21st at the Division 1 state championships. Won the Portage event in a season-best time of 15:24.9.

Adam Kern (sr.), Pioneer: A season full of top-10 finishes was highlighted by a second-place finish at a Division 1 regional, a third-place finish at the Holly Invitational, a fifth-place at the Jackson Invitational and a season-best time of 15:39 while placing third at the SEC championship race. Was 11th at the Division 1 state meet, his second All-State performance.

Nick Kern (sr.), Pioneer: Had the Pioneers’ best state championship run, finishing fourth to earn his second All-State honor. Matched his fraternal twin brother’s season-best time of 15:39 to place fourt at the SEC championship race. Also had top-five finishes at both SEC jamborees, the West Bloomfield Invitational, Holly Invitational and the Jackson Invitational.

August Pappas (jr.), Chelsea: A mid-season string of four straight individual victories started with a season-best time of 15:37 at the New Boston Huron Invitational and continued through the Mason Invitational, the Jackson Invitational and an SEC White Division jamboree. Also won a Division 2 regional before picking up his third All-State accolade by finishing fourth at the D2 state finals.

CLASS A FIRST TEAM

Ben Carruthers (sr.), Dexter: His seventh-place finish at the Division 2 state finals led the Dreadnaughts to a surprising second-place team finish. Had top-five finishes at the Spartan Elite Invitational, the Jackson Invitational, the SEC White jamboree and a D2 regional.

Kevin Egedy (sr.), Huron: His season-best time of 16:16 at a Division 1 regional (fourth place) helped the River Rats qualify for the state finals, where Egedy finished 44th. The senior won the River Rat Invitational, was third at the Monroe Jefferson Invitational and eighth at the SEC championships.

Andrew Harper (sr.), Saline: Earned All-State honors and was Saline’s top runner by finishing 26th at the Division 1 state finals. Other season highlights include a 12th-place finishes at the Jackson Invitational (16:13), the Spartan Elite Invitational and the SEC championships.

Joe Lipa (sr.), Saline: Finished ninth in a pair of SEC jamborees (16:33, 16:35), the top finisher from Saline’s pack-mentality approach. Also finished fourth at the Maroon & Gold Invitational, fourth at the Bath Invitational, 13th at the SEC championships, 10th at a Division 1 regional and 62nd at the D1 state finals.

Muhammad Sani (sr.), Pioneer: Put together his best races late in the season, finished ninth at the SEC championships and fifth at a D1 regional. His season-best time of 16:08 was good for eighth place at the Jackson Invitational. Finished eighth at two SEC jamborees and 41st at the D1 state finals.

CLASS B-C-D FIRST TEAM

Jeffrey Bord (jr.), Greenhills: Finished fourth at the Division 4 state championships, his second All-State performence. Was second at both the Oakland Christian Small School Invitational and the Michigan Independent Athletic Conference championships, and had top-10 finishes at the Portage and Holly invitationals.

Bryce Bradley (so.), Chelsea: Had his season-best time (16:27) on a windy day at the state finals, earning All-State honors with a 19th-place finish in Division 2. Bradley was third at a D2 regional, fourth at the SEC White jamboree and fifth at the New Boston Huron Invitational.

Michael Falvey (sr.), Gabriel Richard: Became the first runner in Detroit Catholic High School League history to win three consecutive individual league titles. Fifth at the Holly Invitational and eighth at the Chelsea Invitational. Qualified for states as an individual, finishing 72nd in Division 3.

John Munro (jr.), Whitmore Lake: The No. 2 runner for the Trojans, who finished seventh in the Division 3 state finals team standings. Munro was fourth at the Tri-County Conference meet in a season-best 17:03, fourth at a Division 3 regional and 65th at the D3 state finals.

COACH OF THE YEAR

David Testa, Dexter: As expected, his Dreadnaughts won a Southeastern Conference White Division title and a Division 2 regional championship. But his squad exceeded expectations by finishing second at the MHSAA state finals. Entering the meet, they were shooting for a top-7 performance.

CLASS A HONORABLE MENTION

Andy Sanz-Guerrero, Pioneer Croix Jastrow, Saline Joe Frakes, Pioneer Alexey Vermeulen, Dexter Andrew Barnett, Saline

CLASS B-C-D HONORABLE MENTION

Ronnie Milbocker, Whitmore Lake Nathan Anderson, Milan Joe Hewitt, Chelsea Mark Grum, Gabriel Richard
